Modded Marshall 1936 2x12's

Here’s another cool one, a Scumback 1982B “Tall Bottom” cab based on a ’69 Marshall cabinet. Mine has very authentic looking “Bluesbreaker” grill cloth.
I paid a premium $ for the grill cloth, but Damn it’s Gorgeous!
Oh, and the amp isn’t too shabby either. It’s my 1968 Plexi 50W.

I initially started with a quad of Pre Rola G12Ms from 1968, But a friend suggested I try a mix. So now, I have
a pair of the ’68 G12Ms from Jan and Feb, and a pair of G12H30s 75Hz from 1972 in a X pattern.
It is a dynamite/dynamic mix!!!
All of the speakers are Collector’s Grade, specimens.
(The white material on the Jan ’68 speaker was just some packing material that stuck to the cone, it was removed with tweezers. No problem, at all!!!).

Wow! Definitely worth splashing the cash on the cloth with speakers like that.

I love the pin stripe cloth, I've only ever had the cheaper stuff but I love the look of it and the way it scrubs a bit of top end off.

I did one of my cabs in the checker board because I like the look but it doesn't sound as good as the pin stripe.

I'd love to hear what the EC cloth sounds like.

I'd love to hear what the EC cloth sounds like.

I've got the cloth on my 1962HW.
To me it's transparent sonically and not like some of the soundbites I've seen and heard over the years of the original vintage pinstripe from the mid '60s, which in most cases sounded quite muffled by comparison.
Pundits who have had infinitely more experience with the old cloth should chime in here, this is just my 2c worth.

The only reason, I went with that type of grill coth was that the cab was originally intended to be used with a
JTM45 head 'Clapton spec' amp hence, the Bluesbreaker cloth. The cab came with a quad of his S75-PVC Scumnico speakers.
Unfortunately, I got ripped off by the freaking builder so, I "repurposed" the cab to use with my Plexi, that I acquired years later.
The owner of Scumback, Jim is a great guy, when the cab arrived 2 of the caster wheels were crushed during shipping
so, I emailed him just to find out where I could buy some replacements. Then 2 days later I get a package from him
with a complete NEW set, no charge!!

I might have to get a hold of some and give it a go. It certainly looks awesome.

Yes, your assumptions are correct, I also heard the this, that the cheaper stuff would seriously "Attenuate" the treble.
STONE AGE CABS!!!!!!!!!! They make some seriously great cabs!, what do you have? I was thinking about a 1x12".
I have only shown my successful speaker purchases, now it's time to show you a"mistake" I made early on and the lesson/rule I learned.
NEVER buy without a clear pic of the cone code , no matter what the other pics show you.
The first 2 pics looks great and promising, right? Well I thought so too, I quickly pulled the trigger.
Here's the $ shot, turns out when I got the speaker it was a was a Waldom re-cone. A lot of vintage Celestions' that got blown used this re-cone kit.
They don't sound good.

Ouch! That's a painful lesson to learn. But thanks for sharing, hopefully someone else may avoid the pain. I get the feeling it's a bit of a mine field buying vintage cones. The ones you showed earlier looked like new but it sounds like you deserve the lucky break.

The Stone Age Cabs are great and like Jim, John Wheeler is an equally great guy to deal with.

I started using two amps and wanted to make things a bit easier rather than humping 2x 4x12's around so I got 2 of the over sized 2x12's. I think they are called the 2x12C. Ive had them for maybe 6 years and im still really happy with them.

The cheaper pin stripe definitely takes off the top end. I hadn't realised how much untill I did the checkerboard cab. Granted the checkerboard has a Scumback M55 & M75 and my Stone Age both have H55 & H75's but you can definitely hear it.

It doesn't sound at all muffled but just smoothes it out and I do find it more enjoyable to play.

Yes, Basket Weave is my next project as well. I had a BX cab back in the 90's that got petty beaten up. I kind of gave it away but its recently found it's way back to me.

I plan to restore it and definitely want to go with Basket Weave this time. I have a Hi-Watt cab with Basket Weave but it's a different beast. I've never had a Marshall with BW so it will be interesting to hear the difference.

But as always need to find the time.

The G12S range are very mis-understood and under-valued speakers in my opinion. They are excellent speakers.
The T1417 is basically the same speaker as the T1221 G12M apart from the 7oz smaller magnet. It has a little less bass, and a little less volume, with a slightly warmer mid range. Ideal for playing at home or smaller venues.”

The real world value of this info is that SOMETIMES you can find these beauties at a GREAT price!!! Here are a pair I have from 1972( both with Pulsonic Lead cones , of course) and compared to what I paid for my G12Ms and G12Hs, their price was pocket change!!!!!! Also, not mentioned in the quote is that because of the smaller magnet the speakers will “give up the goods”/Distort, earlier and at a lower volume than the other 2 types. If you ever come across any, seriously consider them!
