THIS IS THE 25th ANNIVERSARY YEAR FOR THE LES PAUL FORUM! PLEASE CELEBRATE WITH US AND SUPPORT US WITH A DONATION TO KEEP US GOING!
We've made a large financial investment to convert the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and recently moved to a new hosting platform. We also have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!
Please support our Les Paul Forum Sponsors with your business - Gary's Classic Guitars, Wildwood Guitars, Chicago Music Exchange, Reverb.com, Throbak.com and True Vintage Guitar. From personal experience doing business with all of them, they are first class organizations. Thank you!
You can do the mod yourself. All that needs to be done is replacing the aged Alnico II magnet with a full-strength Alnico V. Gibson P-90s are a good place to score the Alnico Vs, as there are two of them in there, so you have one magnet for each pickup.
I have the alnico II magnets in my R8 and alnico V in my R7. The tone I'm going for is as close as I can get to PAF territory. Some prefer the V, my ears
like the II magnet better.
If you change the antiquity magnet to a full strength Alnico II, doesn't that turn it into a Seth? Or a rather weathered Seth.
I've been using a Seth in the bridge position of my '57 custom RI for the last two weeks and I've been diggin' it. Yes, there is some microphonic feedback, but it is manageable and the tone is nice.
I have tried them all. I like the V in the Antiquity for both the neck and bridge. The Alnico II in the bridge has too much ice-pick highend IMO.
None of them even come close to real PAF tone. You need to get a pair Rolphs if you want "real close" PAF tone. I can't tell you how good they sound. EDA did a sound sample comparing a Rolph and a PAF search here in the tone zone. I sold my modded Antiquities after I heard the Rolphs.
