Mick Taylor on Sway: The Best of Carla Olson and Mick Taylor

I've been listening a lot to this album recently. Mick's playing on this is great and his tone is excellent. Anybody know what he was using here? Most of it is live from 1990 but there are handful of studio tracks.

Don't know for sure but he plays some slide guitar in there too. Probably played his SG or his Les Paul. He really cuts loose on the Sticky Fingers album track. Great fluid melodic style. His bends and vibrato are done beautifully on that tune.

Sway sounds like it came of of Exile. Same vibe. Love it!

Agree with @Any Name You Wish re: guitar. In the documentary on Exile, you see a lot of SF Fender amps and a lot of Ampegs including some large and some small (and gobs of guitars!) Sticky Fingers was recorded in the UK and in Muscle Shoals...so all bets are off. I'm sure they were stocked with Fender amps in Muscle Shoals...but who knows?

Thanks Patrick. So, he's playing a Les Paul Custom and a Fender amp here. I see and hear the wah. I wonder of he was using any kind of drive pedal or if his Fender was cranked? Any of you Fender users know what model this is?

Hard to catch more than a glimpse of it at the beginning of the clip. Then he blocks the view when turning it up before the slide part. Looks to be a Silverface. He was known to play Twin and Deluxe Reverbs, depending on the era and situation.

Thank You for posting ! What a sonic treat to my ears hearing the most wonderful Mick Taylor ! To my eyes the 2 combo amps one on top of the other look like Ampeg amps from the 70's ? The vocalist here really does a great job and is sort off reminicent of Jagger . What a great tone on Mick Taylor's solo , the way he blends his slide with the use of the Cry Baby ! I was lucky enough to see Mick Taylor 3 times on the Stones 50th anniversary shows in 2012-2013 (Newark, Vegas , Philly ) It was like going back in time and seeing vinatge Taylor era 69-74 Golden Era Stones . The way Taylor tore it up on Midnight Rambler still gives me thrills remembering that thrill !

Saw them, yet he's reaching down below them. Those may not be in play for him; there are 2 other players plugged into something. Very hard to discern what belongs to whom, what's what... hmm.

I think he's got a HM R9 with a Bigsby now, but the LP Custom in the video looks pretty ordinary.
Now I'm watching the MT video after Sway, it's live at the Iridium with Bigsby'd R9. The tone is much more typical, ala Sticky Fingers.

Always loved Mick Taylor's playing. He made that Stones' middle period better than the rest IMO.

I agree, the Custom looks a pretty ordinary 'off the shelf' Les Paul. Just goes to show that in the right hands it can sound great.
The R9 from the Iridium sounds and looks stunning. I'm sure I read somewhere that around that time he was using a Boss Blues Driver. Not sure if I imagined that though!!!!
