• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

That is one sweet Goldtop! Note how the tone caps are wired. I've seen many photos of all original '50s guitars not wired "50's style". :ganz

I forget Ron, what was the difference between 50's and "non 50's" style wiring regarding the tone caps?

Thanks!

Whew! you guys gave me a heart attack for a second... Yes, there is a maple cap that I can see in the cut-out :)
The clarity and open-ness of the tone says maple cap to me too. Tele-like tones are there on this guitar if you wanna go there...I was REALLY surprised.

A friend of mine told me Joe B's best sounding burst, is a... goldtop. An all mahogany one at that.

Another friend of mine (it's good to have friends, lol) has a '58 gt with "modern" wiring. I picked it up for him from the 94 year old original owner a couple of years ago. I asked the owner if it had ever been worked on, as I was removing the back plate at his house. He said, "I imagine you're the first person to turn a screw on her, since she left the factory. I only ever changed the strings every few years"

Sorry, didn't mean to cause stress. All mahogany ones are cool. :)
Yes they are Tom for sure. You were probably seeing the same supposed grain lines in the cavity as I was...but it was just a strange picture...it's a maple cap for sure. :peace2

You're right, it looked like grain lines that gave me the mahogany idea.

Killer guitar! :dude:

Had an earlier dark back Goldtop with white surrounds that I had bought from Larry at Ax In Hand, that was an all mahogany top, that was as clean back in the 80s, that was a great guitar. The maple tops definitely have more nasty to them, tone wise, IMHO....and YMMV....Blewsbreakers 57 came out of the Detroit area from the original owners family and is 5 serial numbers away from George Harrisons 'Lucy', shipped Dec. of 1957.

I was just about the say, that looks like the console at Tower Mastering. Tell Niko, Paula or Jon Brion that JJ says hi, when you see them in the hallway.

Beautiful axe, btw.

Whoa, Tower Mastering...We haven't been called that since the mid 90's during the Frondelli era! I just saw Niko Bolas yesterday and he says I HAVE to bring the GT back to work tomorrow...lol
I see Paula every day..do you ever record here? I'm in Wally Traugot's old room RR1 just down the hall from Paula.
Best,

B

I haven't mastered there since Frondelli ran the place, so no wonder I missed the name change! I haven't recorded there for a couple years. Last time I wanted to, Jon had B locked out, so we went to East West. I usually work at my own place, unless we need a really big room.

Love Niko and Paula. Really good people.

Hi JJ,
JB is no longer in the building so Studio B is back and available if needed...
:note

Is that the one I played? Love that guitar!

Blews, the middle is not out of phase, but they always have a particular sound that seems that way. Same with Rev FB VIIs. I think it's just that the position of the two pickups has the phase in such a way that the combination of constructive and destructive interference results in that sound. So it's naturally out of phase without having to reverse the polarity.

Jon's gone? Wow. About fucking time. All his shit is gone from the 12th floor too? I though they were building a room from Greg in Glenn's old studio.

Jon used to live on my couch many, many moons ago.
