Hi everyone....

I have two Gibson (Les Paul) cases which I am trying my best to ascertain their date period as one of them came with a 1970 LP I purchased some time ago.

I have a purple lined one, 5 latches all in brass (one being lockable), has Excelsior on one of them, gold 'Gibson' on the outside. I think its era is 1969 through 1972?

I have a red lined one, 4 latches all in nickel/chrome (one being lockable), silver 'Gibson' on the outside. I think its era is 1970 through 1975?

Both have a metal 'base plate' at the rear of the case.

It suggests that Gibson cases were in a transition period during these years and thus guitars of 1969-1972 could come with either?

Anyone got any comments or can help?

many thanks

Does the purple interior case have the additional snap on the hinge side? Would be correct for 70-72. If has the bottom stud plate would possibly be a Lifton case.

Sorry, I was interpreting regarding the form fit hard shell cases. Your case above is correct for 1970 and onward. You also have the particular variant with the foam inserts keeping the guitar in place. There were many different Les Paul cases mfg by several companies at that time. Some were left behind in stores and then sold later on or vice versa where a guitar was ordered through a shop( back then shops only had one display model) when it came in you had to purchase a case separately if you wanted one and sometimes the salesperson would grab what they had in stock.
