Hi everyone,
Early Les Pauls with a SG shape enthusiasts might be interested to know that #012121 has recently been featured in an article of the Gibson Gazette: https://gazette.gibson.com/history/one-of-the-rarest-gibson-les-pauls-returns-home/
If I'm not mistaken it is today the latest known 1960 Gibson Les Paul with a SG body shape, which is very cool!
Were there factory SGs that had Les Paul silkscreened on the headstock? How many went out like that? I thought once Gibson switched over to the SG shape, Les’s name was only on the truss rod cover, before it eventually vanished completely.

Great article. It appears that the only thing different from the later SGs is the use of metal bridge saddles on this '60?

I owned a '61 and a '62 and they both had metal saddles, also a '63 (with Les Paul markings and sideways vibrato but w/o PAFs) that had nylon. I think nylon started late '62. The '63 neck was big and round unlike the earlier models.

fwiw, my early ‘63 335 has stock metal saddles..so it’s most likely impossible to pin down an accurate timeframe( as all things Gibson ) but my guess would be late ‘63 onward as I’ve owned several ‘64s which all had nylon

Enjoyed the article. Can't help but wonder how many Gibson guitars from the 50's and early 60's are in the possession of people who haven't a clue as to what they have.

A story like......"I inherited a guitar from my grandfather. I don't play and it's been in it's case for decades. But I know it's a Gibson. Are those any good?"

I think those days are probably gone now but about 20 years ago I drove by a house and saw a Gibson guitar neck sticking out of a trash can. I pulled it out and it turned out to be a TG-1 tenor guitar from the late '20s. It needed work but was playable...I cleaned it up a bit, restrung it and drove 70 miles to a dealer who cut me a check for $250 on the spot.

This guitar is an intriguing example of Gibson experimentation during this time. The 1960 Les Paul Standard cutaway SG body shows just how far past the limits design was being pushed at this point. Collectors who appreciate these treasures see the importance of continuing to live their heritage on.

Maybe someone can strip all its parts off, remove the neck, put it on a '52 body and make a 'burst conversion!

I’m trying to but it says the pictures are too big to download. I can’t figure this out. My phone can’t shrink the pics
