Hi all,

recently read somewhere that when Gibson renecked guitars back in the day that they would print a large font serial number on the back of the headstock. Is that true?

I think that they don't re stamp serial # , i could be wrong unless they are doing it different these days .

Thanks for the reply, but the reason why I posted in this part of the forum is because this is supposed to be a post 1965 (based on nut width) but not new re-neck. Hope that adds some clarity to the OP.

That is a very large font and imprint

right. Thought maybe you all would have seen something like this before. Seems like it is not a well accepted "Gibsonism"? It is just something I had not heard nor seen before.

One of my 1961 SG/LP Standards was refinished by Gibson in the early 70's. It's got the large font serial # on the headstock as well.

Ah! Great to know. Thanks! I am considering that husk as I have all the vintage correct parts already to put it together. I Just don't know if that is a fair value for a renecked husk.

Here is quote from Ok guitars. He has seen al ot of 335s and has what would call evidence based assertions.

"There are other things to look for if you suspect a guitar has been renecked. If it’s done at the Gibson factory, they usually (and I stress usually) restamp the headstock with the same serial number that’s on the orange label except that they use a larger and/or bolder font."

I looked around and found many examples, including a 345 renecked in 66, a LP standard from both 60 and 61 with re-stamped numbers.
