• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Why hasn't anyone removed that fugly plaque yet?
Can you imagine spending six figures on a vintage burst and having that piece of excrement on it ? I would promptly remove it and do what ever needed to be done restoration wise to fix said damage from the adhesive .

Well Strung in New York posted a picture of him with Big Ed, a '58 Explorer. They said they can't reveal the owner... yet. Two bursts for one Explorer? Still, I'm confused as to why he'd sell two of his favorites. I know of a few '59s he owned (Reed, Bosco, Spot, Skinner, Snakebite, Carmelita, Lazarus, and Lorelei). Spot is currently for sale at Matt's (https://www.mattsguitar.shop/en/guitares-stock/spot). I can't think of any '58s (bursts) he has owned. Regardless of why he chose those guitars to see, or if he sold them to buy Big Ed, as someone attempting to make a serial log of every Explorer with pictures (I'd like to write a book about the Korina instruments in a few years), Big Ed is one I've wanted to document for a while.

The guitar is 100% original to the last screw and sounds and plays incredible. This is how it looked when I owned it. Sometimes things happen over 60 plus years to a guitar. I think I got a nice deal on an original '60 when I acquired it several years ago. The guitar has some moderate flame that doesn't rally show up here. It blew away he other bursts I tried and was the least expensive. I figure that scar saved me at least $50,000 and it’s not that bad.

Rumbleseat was kind enough to let me trade into it when they were in Ithaca.

Right, I'd prefer the patch of missing finish exposed to the "plaque". I'd probably have someone like Kim (HM) spray in that area, knowing it could actually decrease the value.

9 0911 is a hot mess. Looks like a neglected guitar to me. I know some guys love that look.

But since own neither and more than likely never will, WGAF. 😅

If I were to do it all over again, I would have had it restored. But Kim wasn't doing biz at the time yet; Uncle Lou "Knew a guy" when I asked him for his advice. In the end I kept it as is.

My first guess would be "it got drug behind a bus" or something. To be fare, the bare wood on 9-0911 is in all the right places (above the pickups, where the arm rests, it even has hanger burn): except for the one spot behind the tailpiece. Maybe the owner wore some rough jackets that wore it down. It has Schallers, which tells me that someone put some time into this piece. My next guess would be water damage judging by those lines near the knobs (well quite frankly, they're everywhere but you can see them near the knobs).

But this brings us back to Johnny B.; benign damage (benign as in it doesn't effect the way the guitar plays or feels) is a double edge sword: Do you keep it and have a beat guitar, or do you fix it up and have a newer guitar? Think of some of those gold tops, like "Snatch" (previously owned by Joe Satriani) or JB's "The Cajun" (a late 55 seen in the Reverb video). That story is cool. it shows where a guitar has been. Now think of Lazarus. Sure JB could've just put parts in it and played a red burst, but it just wasn't right. It's all up to the beliefs of the owner.

I saw on social media Joe replying to a comment why he's selling some of his bursts and he replied that apartments are expensive. Another post seems to suggest he's bought an apartment In New York where he was originally renting. He may still be buying the explorer who knows but I got the impression he was selling the bursts to buy the apartment.

Well that would most certainly devalue , but then after shelling out the $ how can you look at the plaque ? No win either way . You are 100% correct about the devalue aspect .

Amazing he can fit his dreads in that stocking cap.
I have to give Kudos to Joe for for going for tone and not the prettiest face by selecting this guitar. Maybe it was the price point at that time? I have see nthis on in person and the flame was not obvious for sure.

I can't speak for Joe B, but his ownership history suggests he wants to get his hands on every Burst he can but doesn't intend to keep them all "forever".

Commentary: he probably enjoys the hell out of it and does fine financially.
