• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Joe Walsh with Jimmy Pages number one burst before he sold it to him!... Pictures Taken in January 1969 in Kent, Ohio at JB’s. I had only seen one picture from this gig before and now I found a couple of others. This is a couple of months before he sold it to Jimmy. The angled flame pattern is definitely that guitar. And you can also see the original square nose burst case!... I have included a picture of Jimmy getting back that case from a guy that pulled it out of a dumpster at the Nassau Coliseum in 1972 and had it all those years and returned it to Jimmy a couple years ago... The first known pictures of Page with the Les Paul are from early April at Olympic studios during the recording of Whole Lotta love. I’ve included a couple of those pics here and you can see the Vox amp and Rickenbacker cabinet that he used for those sessions along with what I believe is the Long Tom echo unit that he is reaching for. And at his feet the Supro amp used for all of Zeppelin I!

Very cool. My username is Zep-inspired, but Joe Walsh is the player who made me a Les Paul fan. Turn To Stone from the Barnstorm album was probably the first time I thought, What's making that sound?

Looking at those pictures, it's amazing how some guitars pass from one owner to the next. Joe Walsh and Jimmy Page are both great guitarists.

I remember seeing Joe Walsh and the James Gang in early 70....I think he played this Les Paul and a Plexi Dan Armstrong guitar...they put on an awesome show and when they played "Bomber"...he play a riff of " Good Times Bad Times" in the middle....Thanks for the pics..

In the first Joe pic (far left) the darker area on the main body looks light or faded out. On the Jimmy pic where he is reaching for the echo unit that part of the guitar looks a lot darker. Maybe it is just the color vs black and white. Cool old pics that's for sure. Thanks for posting.

Its just the black and white photo.... this color pix of Jimmy with the guitar was taken less than a month later and you can see the cherry doesnt go as deep into the middle as it appears in the black and white studio shot.... its definitely the same guitar in the pix with Walsh, somewhere I had a clearer pix of it with Joe and you can see the flame pattern is the same

Great photos! Thanks for posting.

I saw the James Gang, immediately after first record came out. I was in high school just outside of Detroit; and there was this great venue nearby that went by a few different names over the years--the Palladium, the Birmingham Teen Center, etc. Anyway, I saw so many great bands there and it was small, intimate and cheap enough so I could afford to go every month or two. That year I saw the original Fleetwood Mac there, Pink Floyd, Procol Harum, Seger (just a local yokel at that point), Rod Stewart and the Small Faces. The James Gang was great! I imagine Joe was playing that guitar...but I can't say I actually remember, lol. I do remember that I was washing my hands in on the john when he popped in to comb his hair. I was star struck...but he wasn't really a star yet. They were just a new band, one step up from "local guys".

I don't know if it's the same guitar, if you look at the Walsh photos, it has Grover tuners on it, but if you at the Jimmy page photo the tuners go back to production klusons, which Jimmy changed to Grovers soon afterward.. It could not be the same guitar, Jimmy would not have been able to put the kluson tuners back on because the holes would be enlarged !!!

Well there are a couple reasons I think it probably is the same guitar..... this pix of Walsh I found is a little bit clearer.... to me the flame pattern and upward angle of the flame on the left and slight downward angle on the right match, as well as the vertical highlights and dark spot near the bottom strap button.... also the white switch tip in both pix and what appears to be a non original rounded corner jack plate in both pix.... not definitive but I think appears to be the same.... as far as the tuners, I think its very possible that Walsh wanted to keep the grovers, put back on the klusons and couldve used tin foil or a number of things... we all did that crap back then LOL... parts were scarce and so were bucks, I think he put them back on.... I was told from other sources this was definitly the same guitar, but it was a long time ago.IMG_3738.jpg
