Many dealers post serial numbers, eg Dave's, Garrett Park.....

So what does that mean ?

It mens that some people think they're hot stuff because they know a serial number and you don't.

About the pearl logo - on all Gibsons with pearl logos up till around 1970 or so the actual Gibson script was cut exactly to size and then inlaid into the headstock - thus no rectangular outline. Around 1970, Gibson went to a different way of inlay involving a pantograph which cut the inlay out of a rectangular piece of mother of pearl. This method is almost perfect so far as botched pearl cutting is involved and undoubtably saved Gibson a whole lot of money. If any of you have ever cut a logo out of pearl (and I have), it's a very tedious time consuming job and it's very easy to screw up a piece of pearl (about $6 in material a shot). You would think that Gibson would use the old fashioned method for the historics, but maybe they're saving that as a marketing ploy for next year.

That's not true, Bobby. There's pictures of a stripped early '60s SG headstock with the logo and epoxy still intact, embedded in a pocket that outlines the outside lines of the logo in a box pattern big enough to include the dot over the I. Ask Dave Paetow to post another link to the pictures.

What I'm saying is, the method used on the OLDER guitars was to cut a box around the pearl logo and fill it with expoy, like they do with teh historics now.

Ok......I'll bite Dean what's the real scoop on why they block the serial #.

If you don't want to say, that's fine.

I'm just curious as to what you meant.

What's wrong with the logo? ALL the Historics look like that! Old Bursts look like that, too. The logo is cut to size, but the route where the logo is inlaid is not, it is oversized, and the logo is inlayed with black filler. They did it that way in the 50's, and if you don't believe me I'll dig up the pix. It is historically accurate this way. I talked to Mark the other day, he is a cool cat, and he does check out the forum all the time.
I can speculate why the serial is covered up, but I'd rather not say. It is not because the guitar is hot.
