i sold my rat2 recently on ebay, i initally loved it but quickly found the saturation to be too much, i found notes to be smothered in gain, it had to go.

i got a home loan of boss sd1 and od3. i expected the more expensive od3 to kick the sd1`s ass. not a bit of it. the od3 sounded more sterile than a dental surgery to me, the sd1 had every tone you could wish for on a lp. from billy gibbons dirt to singing sustain a la gary moore, it has the lot. i raced back to the shop and bought the sd1. i believe its a fave of zakk wylde.

i use it in my

89 Ivory LP Custom, Crybaby 535,boss tu2. marshall ed1 comp. boss sd1 super overdrive, boss ch1 superchorus, boss dm3 analog delay, marshall jcm800 (2204) , vintage checkerboard marshall 4x12 with G12H (originals) , rig, which has never sounded better since i got the sd1.

any other users of the sd1 on this site ?

You may have helped me here. I'm looking for a distortion/overdrive pedal to do the long smooth Gary Moorish thing in front of my 2104 (JMP 50 master volume combo). I intend to run the amp cleanish with my Marshall Bluesbreaker to do the blues thing. Waddayareckon? Anything better?

SD-1

I use the SD-1 and Rat. The SD-1 is also one of my favorites. Depending on the drive, you can have a nice clean sound with a little "oomph" to it or lovely sustaining lead. I use the Rat if I want a gnarlier, stinging blues tone. The SD-1 is smooth. Put the tone around 1:30-2:00 and all the harmonics come to life.

Oh, by the way Jimmy, I picked up a Marshall JCM 800 combo - I have finally found "my" amp. All I can can is, I have heard the voice of God!! Now, after I recuperate from Xmas, I will search out a JCM 800 2205 head. You were right!

Hmm, I guess I mean the one thats 50 watts with the two channels. Anyway, I wish I would have tried the JCM 800s earlier. I find myself only using the SD-1 with this amp more and more over the Rat. You have a great Xmas too. Oh, my friend gave me her DM-2! Said I could have it - yesss!

I really like the Boss SD-1 with my Les Paul through Marshall and Hiwatt amps.

RP&BW, just for clarity, the 2205 is the 50 watt channel switcher. The 2210 is the 100watt channel switcher. Great amps if you want the high-gain sound.

I've been telling everyone that the SD-1 is the best pedal for years. It works great with both my Soldanos (I know - why an overdrive with a Soldano but it works great with the clean channel)and my Super Reverb.

I own two - both made in Japan. Is there a difference between those and the Taiwan ones?

My trick is 10-11 on th level and very low on the drive.

SD-1

My Boss SD-1 sounds incredible into my '68 Plexi! I started with a recent production model (made in Korea), then bought an older made in Japan model. The Japan model sounds even better!

I've finally found the great "early ZZ Top" tone I've been searching for for waaay toooo looong.

And yes, my Les Paul loves it!!

I ran a SD-1 and a Rat in combo for years, but lately I'm using a Visual Sound Jekyll and Hyde and like it better. It replaced both of the other pedals since it's basically the SD-1/tubescreamer and Rat in 1 pedal.

My first pedal was an SD-1. I don't have it any more, but I sure miss the smooth overdrive you get from it. Kinda wish I still had it...

Howdy Jimmy!

Have you seen the SD-1 808 mod posted on the FDP a while back? Here's a great drawing on how to perform the mod, and here's the FDP thread about it. They say the tone gets smoother and warmer.

Have a great new year!

Thanks for the links Tonebender.

I'm no electrics guy so i am unfamiliar with the term 'jumper'.
Can some one explain step 5 to a non-electrical guy.

Thanks

A jumper is just a piece of wire used to bypass a component, so the electric signal "jumps" past it. So, in step 5 in performing the mod, you just remove the diode and put bare wire in place of it (so the signal can take the same route as before but without going through the diode, unlike in step 3 where the signal just takes another way instead of the capacitor). Hope that helped!

Yelly, check out a Marshall Guv'nor, the old one, black box, six knobs on the upper edge. Moore used to use this years ago, on the blues stuff.

Check out his official site for all the other pedals he's used, including a Tubescreamer. I *think* he uses his amps clean-ish, and his overdrive comes from pedals. Course, I could be wrong... :)

Sean. I've seen the Gary Moore web site and the TS9DX but £119 is a rip off. I have been looking casually for a Mk1 Guvnor ever since "Still got the blues" but they are silly money for what they are thanks to Gary. Of course, if you tell people you're looking then the price is never right.
I confess I use to used an SD1 when they first came out with a point to point wired Super Lead 50 and loved it many years ago. It got lent out never to return in the 10 years I spent hopping round channel changing combos....Boogie IIb et al. I've now realised I had it pretty right 25 years ago and have returned to my Marshall roots....great big, fat toneful roots they are too!
Oh..and my SD1 should arrive tomorrow.
