wait for the temperatures to drop even deeper, let it freeze outside for a few hours and then put her beside a fireplace. That will work. If you will like the result? I really don't know.

I think the modern RIs do not check like the originals did due to laquer components and thickness. The modern laquers are much more flexible, the old ones were quite britle and the surface broke easily

Yeah, that's what i read everywhere...i just thought maybe there's a "new" way to get it done.Authentic without ice-spray or using razors!!!

stay away from the ice spray. It might cause spider webby cracks that aren't authentic at all

My suggestion is don't try. I did and deeply regretted it. Ended up getting the top entirely refinished. The upside, now that it is done in ultra thin nitro it not even looks better than before, it will also age in a lot more authentic way than the stock gibson lacquer.

I guess i'll put it out in cold tonight, maybe for one hour and get back into the house wre it's warm...
I'll report if that works.

It's an 2011!

Play the snot out of it and treat it like shit. I really do not get the whole fake checking thing. But some cold winters and mistreatment will get you there. My favorite R9 is from 2000 and I played up and down the East cost with it for 10 years. Everyone that sees and plays it loves it! I am constantly being told how "Authentic" it looks. ( a term that just cracks me up, of course it is authentic, it is a Gibson). The wear and dings that come from careful hard use tell an authentic story. The guitar reflects me and tells my story. If you have the patience you can achieve the same thing. Mine has no checks yet and with luck I will avoid it, I haven't toured Canada in winter yet, so who knows!

I am still getting used to my new computer and am having some difficulty with photos right now. I will be posting them all as soon as I can. The best part is I played the guitar into its present state. It is not really beat looking, but the color has faded and there are some dings. But all the time spent playing it has made it part of me. My son calls it the grail, and I have owned many guitars but this is the best I have ever had. That is why I hate the bashing of the Historics. They are what they are, and what they are is damn fine musical guitars. I don't care about tops, I don't care about color or how close this or that screw is to a 50's screw, I only care about what a great guitar they are to play and hear.

So.......tried it tonight, but i knew it´s still too warm outside...4°C ~ 39.2 °F

25-30 minutes outside and back into the house - heating/warming it up quick with a hair dryer and nothing happened...

Maybe i´ll try it again when it´s below zero....

I tried this many years ago on an R9, many times, in very cold temperatures, hair dyer and all, and I live in Canada. Didn't get even one line of checking after repeated attempts. Nothin.

I know the Fender Custom Shop uses canned air freeze to some success, I have some very nice Relics from them that look great but it's an entirely different style pattern of finish checking than you see on the Murphy stuff, etc. Not sure if anyone has tried it on a Les Paul finish.

+1 ...though I'm not in Canada ...however, I did get some slight checking from just the opposite ...that is, having it ( my '99 historic 335 ) out in the intense summer heat and coming into an air-conditioned room ..go figure :hmm
