• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Unfortunately it seems these days like the flame sets the price. . . . of course, that's the "asking" price and we have no idea if he'll get that or not.

It may be wishful thinking or someone may jump all over it - hard to tell but you know what they say - "it's worth what someone will pay for it".

Me, I'm not buying a 98 model for over new MSRP. . . .

These days?? Flame has always set the price since the Historics started. Better top always brings more money. Maybe a little high for the guitar posted, but it is a lefty. Which is pretty hard to find from that era.

As are buyers. The price is a reach. 98's were double stained to pop the flame and the following year, 99 40th ANN. saw big changes in specs that, quite frankly make all the pre 99's less desirable. The top has an off bias board bookmatch which gives the forced, angular chevron which, though dramatic lacks the natural beauty of an on bias cut chevron. In the historicly correct market this is akin to using a quilt top. Beautiful, but not historicly correct and a dead giveaway visualy. These kinds of tops just were not done in the 50's.

You also have to factor in VALUE. A rip snortin' crackerjack of a brand spanking new R9 with nice top and greatly improved specs, (neck shape, nut, inlays, caps and pots, klusons, custombuckers, side dots, hide glue, pore filled finish and more), can be found for quite a bit less. I've seen some go through the great, great H.O.G. that smoked this one visualy.

Sumptin' to think 'bout.:hmm

I just got an email from one well known guitar shop asking $6299 for its 14 59 reissue LPs. I am glad they are not 6300!!

Actually and generally speaking most if not all the 90's historics bring higher prices just about across the board. And yes the better the top the higher the price and that is not affected by the connotation of double staining which means nothing in setting a market value. Many high end manufacturers have been doing that for years right up to the present.

But what if you want a double stained/enhanced monster top Historic? There is a market for those & history has shown that even though the newer historics are closer to vintage spec, people still pay a premium for these mid-late 1990's monster tops.

Personally I am not blown away with the top on this one, but there are many others that I think are gorgeous.

98's have extra mojo from the factory that year, they should bring substantial premiums to all other years. Get with the program people....

It'd be interesting to see if 'right handed' '98s do sell for a premium.......I personally have my doubts about this(am willing to be proved wrong though).

Man you guys are way too serious, extra mojo from the factory? really?
:##

I do love my 98 tho..... paid $3100 for it about 5 years ago and would be happy to get that back out of it, if it ever goes up for sale.

I liked 2001 for some nice 58's that seemed to be consistent overall...

Bollocks to the flame, unless you want to gawp at it all day on the guitar stand. It's the tone that counts flame or no flame.
