• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

I’ve been listening to a lot of clips of these amps and they sound great! I love the Hiwatt sound and would go for something like the JP lowatt combo.

Any Hi-tone users out there?

Thanks!

Me! I have a CP30, a Lowatt SAP combo, a CP103, and a Lowatt CP combo on the way. And an original ‘75 Hylight Hiwatt DR-504, but I almost always play the Hi-Tones instead. Best amps made today. I have a bunch of other amps sitting around it that I’ll plug into sometimes, but after a few minutes, I always revert back to the Hi-Tones.

Happy to answer any questions if got any.

And if you like that JP slightly higher gain thing, here’s my Lowatt SAP.

Oh man, awesome - the clips sound great!

How would you compare the JP to the Lowatt SAP? I’m using a Friedman Twin Sister combo right now and I can get in the ballpark, but I would love to have the Hiwatt sound. The combo is appealing because it is practical to take to jams, and gig with.

i’m looking for that cranked Jimmy Page and Pete Townsend sound.

BTW I recently purchased some Mojo pickups (Crazy Parts VOS) after seeing you demos! I am going to be installing them on Friday when I get my guitar back from being refretted. I’m Superchixxx on Youtube

Thanks!

I’m a huge Pete Townshend fan (hence my love of the CP circuit), but the SAP and JP’s can get you close. The SAP and Lead circuits are a little more Marshall flavored, with a touch more gain on tap, and I got the SAP for variety’s sake. The JP is closer to the original Hiwatt DR circuit.

You can sorta hear what I mean in this clip.

Ok got it, thanks! You kind of need the CP and the SAP 😅

Truly excellent amps, they really totally nail the classic Hiwatt Hylight era tones. My friend has a 30w version and we directly compared it through my 72 SE4122 cab with my 72 DR103. It was really very very similar tonewise, despite the volume difference. We were both very positively surprised. Really the best 30w amp i ever played...

Funny enough, my 30 watt CP30 has more of the 100 watt feel than my 50 watter. I think there may be something about 4 power tubes that gives a certain feel…

How does the Lowatt compare to the 30 and CP103? Which out of the 3 models is your favorite for that Tommy/Live at Leeds tone?

Also I hear Clayton isn’t making the 30 anymore. Any reason you can think of why not?

The CP IS the Townshend-Leeds circuit (CP103). I have a 30 and a Lowatt CP- both are incredible.

I actually asked Clayton that very question, and his answer was that they just weren’t as popular as the 50’s and 100’s. He’ll still make a 30 as a custom order, though

Thanks. I’ve been on the fence for some time. Does the Lowatt really sound the same as the 30, 59 or 100 or can you “tell” that there isn’t as much power (tubes, transformer size, etc)? Thanks again!

Nice comparison with the L. P. I would choose the JP50.

I wish the player with the ES-335 would have played the same material in the same manner? No choice
For me there.

The SG??. No choice for me there, either.

I have a JP Lowatt combo and extension cab on order! I’ll record and post some clips when I have it with my Les Pauls

The other night I worked for Nick Mason, who was the drummer for Pink Floyd. The guy he had playing guitar had a Hi-Tone and it sounded really, really good. He also had a Cornish system. From what I understand they're really nice amps. OTOH Dave Davies once told me that the Hi-Watt thing wasn't all that great. I can't argue with him because he would know better than I. I've been called to work for The Who twice and Pete Townsend was using Vibro Kings both times. I figured he would be all over the Hi-Tone thing.

Maybe he is recalling that “Who’s Next” rig…a Gretsch 6120 and a 5E7 Bandmaster. The Vibroking is a bit stiffer than a 5E7, but there is a link it seems to me.

Love the old Hiwatt's.

I think these Hi Tone's are carrying the flame, particularly the Jimmy page model with the Les Paul - plus how gorgeous is that cab in the video that mthrunn posted above.

Cue a couple of gratuitous pictures of the legacy they're building on.

Used to love thundering about with these battleships.
