• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

There is no such thing as a Murphy Lab VOS guitar. Murphy Lab and VOS are different (and different lacquers). Is it possible you have an Ultra Light Aged Murphy Lab guitar?
Mat,
Hopefully it's not us and/or covid keeping you from this forum and just a busy work schedule bogging you down.

As far as the remarks I personally made and/or questions about the entire guitar being aged, if it's time constraints - then it is what it is and when Gibsons backlog finally catches up - I would expect entire guitar aging, but if it's QC - then kick them people in the ass and fix it.

Now the statement you made above is really confusing, what the blazes is going on ... ""no such thing as Murphy Lab VOS" - Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat the duck

some clarification please, because below are links of Murphy Lab Gloss and VOS guitars with Murphy Lab documentation to back them up

so, is this Nitro not the self-aging Murphy Lab Nitro?

I got a question for ya, Matt! Why don’t the historical have the 16th fret placing in the same spot as it was on the vintage guitars. On historical the 16th fret is aligned with the body of the guitar, and on the vintage ones, it’s past the body by around an 1/8 of an inch or so.

It all depends which vintage or modern guitar you are talking about. There is variation due to the how the neck is set.

I have been insanely busy, yes -- but also very confused where we are at with this thread. It really devolved as they tend to do after any length of time. But I definitely appreciate succinct, direct questions as I have trouble weeding through these.

I repeat what I said earlier. VOS and Murphy Lab are two separate things. But I see the confusion -- "Murphy Painted" is a Murphy Lab option. But it seems Wildwood worked out a deal where they have Tom Murphy paint their VOS M2M guitars for the same upcharge. If I was packing it, I would NOT have used the Murphy Lab COA booklets and I will address this with Custom Shop. Thanks.

Another point of clarification, I would not call the Murphy Lab lacquer self-aging. There is a tremendous amount of work spend both aging it and getting it to check in specific ways. :)

Matt, I have a question about the maple tops that Gibson Custom sources along with the maple tops that Gibson USA sources . I have read that Gibson Custom now sources Eastern Hard Rock Maple (I think Cesar G. said it in a video to Mark ) ? Where and I am only guessing that Gibson USA sources Big Leaf Western Maple ? Seeing photos of tops from Gibson Dealers such as Wildwood and Music Zoo and Dave's .
Gibson Shop has always sourced both Eastern and Western maple...at least in the 1950s and in recent history. Yes, USA primarily uses Western.

Hey Mat! Thanks for still contributing to the thread. A few questions about 335’s:
-Did the 64’s block inlay material change these past year? They seem to be less yellow lately
-Are the black pickup rings still Cellulose Acetate Butyrate?
-Any clue when we should start seeing the new ABR bridges?
Thabks

so you let them PAY FOR THE UPCHARGE BUT NOT GIVE THEM THE MURPHY LAB COA BOOKLETS WOW WOW YOU ARE ALL CLASS!!!!!
Sorry, you're wrong - this has nothing to do with being cheap. It's a branding issue. A VOS M2M is not a "Murphy Lab" guitar, even if painted by Murphy. So those booklets don't correspond to that model. I have several guitars painted by Murphy but they don't come with a "Murphy Lab" booklet. And don't make flippant comments and chase away (once again) the person in the know from Gibson that we WANT back in this thread. Send your complaints to the complaint department - not here.

It can be a rough room here sometimes,.

The very fact that Mat has carved quite a lot of personal time out to contribute to this thread in a quiet and courteous manner hasn't been missed by any number of us.

A thoroughly welcome and valuable contributor to the knowledge of this Forum, among many.

We may all be dancing to a different tune, but we can also with a bit of personal effort, all stay in the same parade.

Stick with it Mat, even though half these buggers aren't half as sane as I am....

I didn't read the whole thread but here are a couple things I would like to see:

1- That Theodore guitar as a standard production limited run. I bought a Moderne when they came out again and I love it. The Theodore as a non CS would be amazing!

2- I had the opportunity to test a Firebird X for a week or two back when it was introduced. There was something very special about the way it interacted with direct recording/amp sims. While the guitar was radical and not widely accepted the technology for recording direct that it possessed worked incredibly well. The pickups also sounded nice through a regular amplifier.

Maybe that technology (just the pickups/direct recording option) could be built into something. I think so many people in their little bedrooms are using Guitar Rig and Amplitude that there would be a huge market for this. I know it's probably the only time I've been happy with an amp sim.

Other than that I think Gibson does a great job and I find myself way more loyal to the brand than any of the FMIC lines. I love Fender, Gretsch and Guild guitars but by making them so cheap (quality wise) and lowering the power of the brand I find myself loving the old ones and not buying the new ones. The fact that Gibson makes affordable* guitars made in America means a lot to me. Please don't offshore.

Thanks!

* Compared to FMIC, etc... models that are USA made Gibson offers some real bargains! They're not cheap but you can still get a Tribute, Junior, Studio, Special for about what a USA Stratocaster (that's probably made in Mexico and assembled here) costs.
