• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Hi all,

I recently purchased a Les Paul Custom from the 70s which had newer humbuckers installed in.

Hopefully the original T-top were kept in the case, quite a rather good surprise I may say !

Could you please help me identify the type of the installed pickup? Is there a way to find it whether it’s a classic 57, etc. ?

Many thanks !

No. It's a humbucker. Not a 57 Classic. All anyone can offer is a guess.

How? That is the default base without any model identifiers. It could be any humbucker from that era except Dirty Fingers. They were added aftermarket and could be anything the modder chose. They could be 496R and 498T, but how are you sure?

really? I thought that was more like a 500T. You cannot wind that much with 42ga wire.

I can say that if the pole screws are in the wider spaced holes it's a bridge pup.... more likely a 498T if it has ceramic magnets a 500T

If the pole screws are in the narrow spaced holes it's a neck pup,...more likely a 490R

'57s are PAF replicas,....so they will not have the extra set of pole screw holes.
