There are plenty of other examples of owners marking their equipment

Pete towsend
Eric clapton
George Harrison
Jimmy page
Dimebag
Etc etc

Back in the day people would put their social security number on them etc

Ps Kieth Moon put dynamite in his base drums

I just think we are having an overreaction from both camps here. At least for me I’m not nor would I tell someone what they can or can’t do with their property. I just think that some “customisation” are unfortunate based on my own personal preferences. But that’s just an opinion. I’m not polishing my pitchfork.

Mike Bloomfield’s telecaster for example has a big cutaway for a lefty. It’s done, it’s happened can’t change it but it is still an unfortunate modification to such an instrument. Even G E Smith who has far more clout than a nobody like me called that modification unfortunate when he played the guitar. Even though it was done for legitimate reasons.

OK then. What if, when the time comes, Greeny is bought by a left handed billionaire? Would it be ok if he modified Greeny, a historic significant and iconic Burst, like this?

This is (was) once a real Burst from 1959...

I know I wouldn’t like it. I’d probably be a bit mad. But that’s is about as much power I’d have over the situation as anyone else.

But I’m in a custodian phase of my life.

I just think this whole conversation got blown way too far.

People can do what they like with their own property as long as it's legal.

Seriously this thread has gone weird. Have you guys never gone to a car show and thought “I love that car but I just don’t like those wheels they chose to put on there”. Or “man that car is beautiful but I think I prefer the one across the way”.

Thinking it is one thing. Criticising it publicly is another. You can say what you like, of course. If others feel you're not thinking it through, they have the same privilege. I'm not angry or upset, and I certainly did not mean to offend anyone.

No offence at all. I’ve just never been in an environment where people have not been allowed to opening express their opinions whether positive or negative.

Clearly, there is a wide range of how responsible we feel for other human beings.
Everything has a spectrum.
I have dedicated huge chunks of my life to the service and betterment of others, so my opinion will always be heavily skewed in that direction.
The above opinion represents the opposite end of the spectrum.

Ted Nugent used to carve his initials in big letters to deter theft.
I think he did it to a 'burst.
But I think we know what it would mean to follow Ted's example...in anything.

I'm be intrigued to learn how fellins about property rights exist on a spectrum, and how respecting them is the antithesis of service and betterment of others.

I think we can put this debate to bed. It’s not a hard thing to understand.

I still don’t know how we got this far.

If people don’t like public scrutiny then don’t put yourself out there for the world to see.

But it all good. Just good peaceful conversation.

For those who wants to remember Greeny Pre-KH:

Might also be worth remembering that whilst in this individuals keeping, a well known UK based faker was commissioned to ply his trade.

I have a picture somewhere of the guitars side by side, which if memory serves, was saved from this very Forum.

The real rescuers of Greeny were quietly waiting in the wings; I also have pictures of those individuals with this magnificent guitar - they however remain private.

My respect for those Men remains unabashed.

It was around the time of this video that I heard first Fleetwood Mac on the radio, bit of a kid, 6 maybe 7 years old, I remember saying to me Mam that that's what I wanted to do. Peter playing Greeny was the key in the door for me, it's where I got my start. I've been in that room for nearly 50 years.

Some stuff is important, some stuff is just all soul.

I got to play Greeny - it nearly broke my heart with joy.

The circle complete.

I bring to mind a giant of the written word -

But I, being poor, have only my dreams;
I have spread my dreams under your feet;
Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.
