• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Got these "Tone Bones" and went from 6L6´s to EL84´s....

Got these TAD Tone Bones today ( http://www.tubeampdoctor.com/product_info.php?category_id=85&products_id=669&language=en ) and tried them in my Blues Deluxe (with a Jensen C12N and a 7025S in V1, a 7025W? in V2 and a 12AT in V3...)

Wow, very cool! Can turn up the volume much more without earbleeding and still enough headroom...probably...to play with the band...

Yeah, if it makes your amp more versatile and you don't have another amp, I think these are very practical...however, I'm not an EL84 fan....don't like the tone so much.....so, going from the glorious big American, bluesy sound of a 6L6, to more of a British, compressed tone wouldn't be an option for me.

To be honest the amp still sounds like my Fender Blues Deluxe...not that british as i expected:biggrin:

But as you said you´re a fan of the classic "American 6L6 sound", what preamp tubes would you recommend?
I always try some different tubes in the V1....the 5751 and 12AY were probably my favorites so far....

Well, those lower gain preamp tubes maybe the ticket for this amp....I always used 12AX7(A) and 7025 in a Fender style non tweed amp. Maybe a 12AT7 in the Phase Inverter. I like RCA and Mullard for Fender tone. Mullard in the 12AT7 / ECC81 spots, and maybe the tone stack position, but RCA in the rest.

Ime, the circuit is more of a determining factor in the sonic results than is the tube(power) choice. That is, just because a certain tube yields certain results in one circuit doesn't mean that it will yield the same sonics in a different circuit. I have 3 old stereos with EL-84's in them, and they yield crystal clear sonics. EL-34's in a BF FEnder circuit will still sound much like a BF FEnder as compared to what they sound like in the 5F6A/Marshall circuit.

V1 in the Blues/Hor Rods??? I like 12AY7's. IT widens the sweep of the first voluem and makes the overdrive functions usable to soem extent.
