The SG™ ’61 Reissue Proprietary Limited Edition returns to the classic design that made it relevant, played, and loved -- shaping sound across generations and genres of music. In 1961, the Les Paul model was put on hiatus and an all-new design evolved into what is today known as the SG or “solid guitar.”
The Gibson SG '61 Reissue Proprietary Ltd retains the styling of the original featuring a SlimTaper™ mahogany neck and a bound rosewood fingerboard. The mahogany one piece body features deeply sculpted body scarfing, a 5-ply teardrop pickguard, and a 22nd-fret neck joint. The nickel-plated hardware includes a classic-style Tune-O-Matic™ ABR-1 bridge and Vintage Deluxe tuners with Keystone buttons. The pickups are ‘57 Classic™ humbuckers™ for a classic voice with added power and top end. The hand-wired controls feature audio taper potentiometers.

Black is way cool on an SG. I keep coming back to the SG as a guitar I would like to own. I wonder if anyone has tried adding weight to the tail end of an SG to provide better balance.

Yes, a friend of mine installed a stop tailpiece from an old Ibanez guitar to the tail
which was heavier than the Gibson tailpiece to ad some weight. Worked out well for him.

There's also the add some weight to the strap above where it joins the lower button.

Has any fearless soul routed the back and added lead weight, et al? Surely some intrepid perhaps misguided Don'r Give AF soul has gone there in SG history...?

There is already a cavity for the electrics on the back. I think if you start out with one that is already on the heavy side (for an SG, say 7-8lbs), use a wide leather strap with the regular rough cowhide back surface, and add a little brass weight in the cavity somehow (glue or gorilla tape), it would work great.

Lead is more dense and less conductive than brass, FWIW.

Also if you can anchor it really well. Otherwise, I'd worry about it getting loose, banging the wiring and electronics.

It's really academic to me, a wide / suede / rough strap works well enough for me. And I'd weigh the back end of a strap before touching the guitar.

I have 5 Gibson SGs, two Standard, one Standard made like a '61 RI (year 2015), one Special and one '61 RI, they are perfectly balanced.
You can have neck dive issue if you install a set of heavy tuners but with the KLUSON Revolution no problem, those tuners are lighter than the Gibson Deluxe, 1/19 high ratio and smooth knobs, holes and screws position are the same. The best tuners for a Gibson IMO.

A Gibson SG is always balanced, it' s different with an Epiphone SG ...

The SG '61 RI Proprietary Limited Edition was a part of Gibson range, it was available with a nice Cherry finish. One piece body and real AR-1 bridge.
