Gibson Historic plastic parts

Gibson USA still sells plastic parts. They don’t change the sound And I would imagine would fit right.

The only thing consistent about Gibson is their inconsistency!

Sad but true, shame that such classic guitar is being tarnished by the modern brand name, was looking at buying custombuckers which are not cheap but I heard too much about the inconsistencies which at these prices is unbelievable, when I was trying to get my first LP in 2017 I tried so many in different stores until I found one that I was actually happy with, some were pretty bad.

What year is the guitar (the pickguard profile varies by year)? I may have a complete set of Historic plastic to spare.

I believe any of the USA parts should work fine. There are also generic parts out there. The plastic doesn't change the sound so don't worry about it.

I also strongly endorse Dan. He was wonderful helping me get a more vintage accurate pickguard for my 2022 64 335 last month. It is scary how perfect his template matches Clapton's famous 64.

For other plastics, I used to really like Creamtone's Absolute Vintage collection, but they just aren't reliable anymore and most stuff seems permanently out of stock. I've had a good experience with Crazy Parts Area59 parts for Tophat knobs and switch tip.

When was your last order from him? When I was looking for parts for my Historic Makeover 5 years ago, he was great.

But things really went downhill in 2020. I ordered a set of aged gold Grovers and it took forever. When they did arrive, they were the standard nickel model, not gold. I emailed to report the mistake several times and never got a response.

He does Everything there at his Apt. He might be overloaded with stuff., still no excuse. Might just be an honest mistake. He does all the aging on tuners himself.

Plastic parts: The original stuff was Butrayte and the material that Gibson uses now on all of the Historics is that. The newer guitars get ABS plastic. The ABS does Not age like Butyrate or have the same patina. If you want the plastics that look like the older parts, you have to get butyrate..
Seems kinda odd to me as Gibson spent a ton of $$ to get these made and then just blew it off after 2-3 years. They had certain plastics' manufacture reverse manufacture the materials and then didn't continue on with it. So don't let them give you the bullshit that the new reissues are exactly the same as the originals...

My experience sadly was not isolated. There were threads here and at the MLP forum filled with countless bad experiences the last couple of years and mine was among the least bad. I just mentioned it as an example. I seem to recall several stories of Lonnie ghosting on customers for many, many months and even some purchases not being honoured at all.

It was not the Lonnie/Creamtone that we all knew and loved. Somthing went very wrong (which was why I asked when you last ordered from him). Whatever it was that went on, it sadly ruined his reputation with most in this community.

Add me to the list of screwed by Creamtone. Ordered knobs back in July and never received. Called and talked to him a month ago and he "was going to send them out next day". Never received. Keep trying to call back but no answer and his voice mailbox is full so I guess I'm out $50. Won't do business with again

I ordered (and received) a Creamtone pick guard in ‘19. It was almost identical to a new Gibson USA pick guard you could buy off the shelf at Guitar Center. I emailed him about returning it but never got a reply. Out $50 too.

There's lots of great plastics to be had these days! MojoAxe, OTP, (vintage haven) Bartlett, Mark's, Retrospec, etc.

I've got a few different types on my R8. Go with your preference...

Just as a head up if you’re planning to upgrade plastics on a newer Murphy Lab the pickguard mounting screw hole by the fretboard is slightly higher than that of aftermarket parts. So some aftermarket pickguards won’t fit unless you’re willing to drill a second hole, which I wasnt willing to do so I kept the guitar stock.
