You’d all be surprised at little power you’re actually using even when “cranked.”

1watt at one meter is close to 100 db.

It seems nowadays the big amps probably get in the way of the twelve dancers, fireworks, and video screen.
Dancers are the thing that killed the concert scene for me. Fireworks, flame, explosions, video screens and FX of all kinds were probably bigger back in the 70's and 80's than they are today. I guess young minds are easily amused by a big butt jiggling in front of the screen for the duration of the song. I guess that is why they can get away with repeating the same word over and over for the duration of the song as well.

I watched a bit of the Nashville New Years eve show last night and I spotted a few 4x12s and Les Pauls. Lenny Kravitz rocked a 57 GT over on the other New Years Eve Show.

Saw Zac Brown Band for NYE, not a single amp in sight. It makes the stage look so empty to me. Great show though!

I've seen bands that run a silent stage except for drums. If you sit too close to the stage, you don't hear the PA very well and it sounds really weird.

When I used to go to concerts a lot all of my best sound experiences were when the band had tons of speakers and I was closer to the stage. One of the last concerts I went to in the 80's I had nose bleed seats and could barely make out the guitar player. The PA was mixed very heavily with bass. No matter how good you mic or direct to the PA it is never quite the same.
