I am selling this for a friend whose family ran a music store in the 70's. He got this from the Gibson rep direct. It still has the plastic protector on the control back plate. It wasn't gigged with but was played and put away some time ago. I don't have the missing pup cover, but it gives you a rare look at the special pickups Gibson made for this model which get a lot of love from some people online.
Here are the caveats:
1. The headstock is stamped "second". You know as well as I do that there's no rhyme or reason to this. There's only one obvious "second" potential area and that is a small blemish on the headstock top right that looks like it was machine-made possibly at the factory. It could just as easily have been scraped by the owner. No way to know. You can see the mark in the photos. Other than that mark, there is nothing "second" about the wood, the neck, the finish, the playability or the sound.
2. The missing gold bridge pup cover. (obviously)
3. The original (red fuzz) Protector I case has one latch broken (as they almost all do) I am offering it with either that case or a Protector II case that is in perfect condition. Buyer's choice.
Now as this is a Norlin era piece, I won't be making any crazy claims about 'fantastic 60's tone' or 'light as a feather'. I have a wonderful '81 Silverburst Norlin Custom and this feels about the same as it, though this one is a little lighter and this neck profile is slimmer. These guitars hold their own place in collector-dom just as they are. No excuses needed. The finish is the Tobacco burst. The 5 piece neck feels very low profile.
There are two others on eBay right now up at around $4500 and $5200. Due to the recession, and the couple little minuses (and lets face it, the pup cover is a simple replace) I am pricing this guitar to sell here at $4,100 or best offer. It will go up on eBay if it doesn't sell here so - give me a shout. Shipping is extra.
I have 16 photos of this guitar so email me for more. radioscooter@yahoo.com
