Stainless steel frets didn'r exist until about 30 years later. However, German silver (actually a nickel copper alloy) used for fretwire at this time was harder than the alloy used in most frets nowadays.

I use SS on my 2 50's Les Pauls (and other guitars). I love them. But you might get different opinions regarding SS from others
