Thanks! I believe the official Custom Shop started in 1993. Does your 94/95 have any special serial number? Wonder if they did any pre Historic Customs?

It had an ink serial number that was of the historic type 7 4xxx. Since it was called a 57.

I’ve seen an ad for a 1993 LP Custom in a darker Sunburst. The seller claims it’s a Custom Shop. I believe it’s a regular LP Custom. Did they do any Custom Shop LP Custom’s in 1993?

I'm not sure they made Prehistoric mahogany 54-56 Customs or 57-60 triple pup. Certainly not vintage correct. Any ebony black late 80's early 90's Black Beauty would be rare as it wasn't available from what I remember.

The only Historic I had in hand was the R7 I bought in 93, never saw a 57 custom or R9 in 93 ! I waited over six months when I ordered this guitar .

This 1993 dark Sunburst in the ad has an 8 digit serial number so it must be a regular LP Custom. I guess they probably didn’t do any Sunburst Historic LP Customs in 93 since there were no Sunburst Custom’s 1954-1961.

I bought this BB new in 1994.It weighs 10lbs, and has a very slim neck.
All PUs have a black PAF sticker on them. I painted the pu covers and pick guard when I got it.
Im not sure about the neck tenon, and don't know how to tell if it has a long or short tenon.
Ive have read several posts that state these guitars are weight relived
Any info would be welcome..
regards

Looks good. Did you paint the pickup rings and pickguard? I believe most put cream colored plastic on. Doesn’t the color chip off with time? What does the 2 in the serial number stand for? To check the tenon you just lift up the neck pickup and check if you see the tenon go in to the pickup cavity under the neck pickup. If not it’s a short tenon.

Someone at the other forum posted X-rays of a 96 or 97 historic Custom and it had short tenon with swiss cheese holes, so safe to assume any made before were the same.

That would not have been a Custom Shop "Historic Series" as those were always built with a Long neck Tenon and solid mahogany bodies; no maple cap or weight relieved holes on Historics.

i painted the rings and pickguard white as a tribute to Peter Frampton.
When FCA was released and I saw his custom, it was my dream to have one.
Most of my buddies were looking at Penthouse, or Playboy, I was looking for any guitar magazine that had a Les Paul in it I could find..lol.
At 16 I bought a Omega Electra x210 that was a pretty good guitar. (wish I had kept that one)
A few years later, I traded a Strat, for factory 2nd 2pu BB.That guitar was a beast, no mods to it.
I sold it to a friend while going through a divorce, he still has it. I have 2 Customs now, the BB that you see, and a Custom in alpine white. A Martin D 41 has found a home here as well. I am one lucky guy..

I belive the "2" is the last number of the year it was made 1992.
There are some good people that know alot more than myself about Gibson serial numbers.
Someone will chime in on that.
Ill check the Tenion this weekend, time to change the strings on all 3.

Not sure when Historic Customs first started but I have a '92 pre-historic R4 BB with an ABR1, P100 and AlNiCo V pickups. It is all mahogany but there is still a two piece top. It must have been easier for Gibson to build using the existing production tooling and just swap out the maple for mahogany. The internal channel is a circular hole drilled straight through at the output jack. The binding has a lightly yellowed patina aging. Mine weighs about 10 lbs. It has a short tenon and Grover tuners.

Ok, some cool guitars there. Must have been more difficult painting the plastics than putting cream colored plastics on. The Gibson Peter Frampton Custom has that and i believe Frampton’s original also. But it looks white in stage light. I got a regular 1995 BB that i’ve put cream plastics on. I bought Thin Lizzy’s Live And Dangerous album in 1978 and Brian Robertson played a Black Custom with cream plastics on it. For a long time it was a dream for me to have a guitar looking like that. So i changed the plastics when i got it. I swapped another LP for it and it had no pickup covers when i got it wich looks better with cream/white pickup rings i think. I got an old Guitar Player with Peter Frampton on the cover and his guitar looks so good. Steve Marriott also had one but it was a three pickup with the middle pickup removed and a cover over the cavity.
