• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Extremely interesting "shoot-out " video .....

The notes in the video say it all: “One observation I can offer is that the variance among these guitars is far greater regarding the experience of playing them vs. the recorded audio.”

This is exactly it. As I said before, the first $X,000 is for the audience, the next $Y,000 is for the player. Hint: X is a fairly low number.

That is very true. But I would rather play Y because it plays and sounds much better. A great "tool" makes life/gigs much more enjoyable and when the artist is having a great time so is the audience.

When distorted, it’s tough to say which one is the greatest? However I’d say the Gibson and Bartlett sound the almost identical. Clean, those two sound the sweetest when he played. I’d give the Les paul a hair better. Though I’ll favor Gibson

YUP.
The guitar that you never want to put down is the one to play.
The one that you can't leave out of the case because you know, if you see it, you won't get anything else done.
When you pick it up and hold it, you feel like you're sliding into a warm bath.
For years, I had a guitar like that and I could never get it to sound just like I wanted it to, but with the right amp, settings, etc. it was close enough.
Then I found one that had it ALL.

I should add that I think how a guitar LOOKS, can really influence this.
If how it looks makes you feel like the above...cool...whatever gets you to PLAY.
For me, it's feel.
Just about any guitar can be tweaked and matched with the right amp to sound great.
I took my #1 in trade for an amp.
The guy came ready to buy, but offered me a trade.
He opened up the case and there was a '71 Deluxe.
Routed for humbuckers (Antiquities) with one hole too big, so the space was sticking out.
Schallers..
Mini toggle.
The whole Norlin party pack...clowny burst, 3-piece maple neck, pancake body, volute...
I really needed the money and I was trying to thin the herd before moving to a much smaller crib, but I played it to be polite.
Hmmmmm....a tad under 9.5# (not bad for a Norlin)...what's this?...1 11/16" nut? Wait a second.....DEAD ON 58/59 neck carve that feels exactly like my '58 175 and 59 225.
Played a LOT...tons of wear...but cared for. This one is a gig dog.
This guitar is The One To Rule Them All.
The warm bath guitar.
And it sounds killer...warm and woody.
I don't even remember what kind of pots and caps are in it.
