I played for years with a Custom in my '71 LP and Ive had a JB. For my tastes I like the custom better because its reminiscent of a PAF but ballsy as hell. It has some of the hollow honk and quack with bright top and fat bottom but really kicks (reads about 14k). The JB will have sweeter top (alnico magnet) but from what I remember is more middy, less honky. I think the JB is probably smoother, but the custom more cutting. Its worth a try.
