• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Do we like 1974 Les Paul Customs?

Is it true that the backplates of a 1974 custom are not flush with the body and stick a bit out? can't find any good pictures to see it 😅
Can anyone take some pictures?

I checked mine & sure enough the backplates were a little above the back. I never noticed that before………

Here’s mine, a recently acquired 1973 Custom! It didn‘t have the original pickups or electronics so I could have some fun with it, and also had it refretted. This guitar has the most incredible sustain.

This is one of them
Man, I dig that look. Double cream pickups on a black Custom.

I know this thread is a bit old now, but when Early Norlin's are getting the praise they deserve, I'm all for chipping in. This is my faithful 1972 warhorse, still all original apart from a re-fret. Simply brilliant and sustains for a week!

A Black Beauty Les Paul and a Tele. You must search for the Holy Grail of good guitars, it seems.

for metal or harder rock - are the stock '74 [era] pickups good/strong enough to cut, and still let my amps [early JCM, Fortin, Engl, Mesa Rev.F] do the heavy lifting ? prefer to let the amps lift vs. overwound p/u's.

gotta say that 70's tobacco look is the look, even over black/ebony - which is my #1 stage unit ['01 R68 custom authentic w/ throbaks]. old wood good.
