I watched the ABB Beacon Theater concert last night on DirecTv and ok, I've never heard, seen or been aware of Derek Trucks.

That boy smoked the SG. Never mind Warren Haynes was fabulous, I was drawn to Trucks technique and phrasing.

The antithesis of the wild gyrating, tatooed-guitar-at-the-knees, hey-look-at-me player, he stood eyes closed, nailed to one spot, head bowed, his face totally expressionless, SG slung high under his arm and made some fantastic music. Daddy Butch must be very proud!

I didn't even know who he was 'till the interviews afterward.

Wonderful guitarist! Tonight I'm recording it, twice.

:wow

I felt the same way when I recently watched it.
Haven't seen a shining star like that with the ABB since....;)

Nevermind the fact that he's Butch Trucks's nephew, the way both Haynes and Allman eye him and smile as he plays, you know he's part of the band because he's damn good.

Nephew? My bad, thought he was Butch's son. Anyway, that right hand technique is just incredible!

I've played primarily rhythm for years using a flatpick and have recently started to work toward lead so I dont' have too many right hand picking habits to break. I've been practicing without a pick, just thumb and three for a while now, and it seems so much more natural and expressive to me.

I'll be watching this performance over and over.

I thought he was Butch's son too..
His right hand technique is a classical style approach..using two fingers and thumb for plucking and two fingers for the downstroke at the same time...at least that's what it looks like to me.
There's a few high points in his solos that just absolutely smoke when he raves it up, he shines on that tape.

Something else about this performance that shouldn't be overlooked is how well it was edited. Subjective perhaps but it wasn't the 1-second-per-shot MTV edit style that leaves you dizzy.

The producers of the videotaped program did a remarkable job following the performers, actually highlighting their hands and instruments as well as following the feeling of the songs.

Very well done!

Yep, saw ABB last summer and a lot of this show was what I saw there.

You are so right about Derek. Warren Haynes' tone on this show (to me) is just about as good as it gets. Very few have even come close, imo. Looks like a Diaz head into greenbacks. What kind of pups does he use in his R8?
