• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

The back on this one looks quite reddish on the picutres (see below). Was the back colour on '58 goldtops less brown and more like on bursts?

That's the first gold top I've ever seen with a cherry back. :hmm

I'm based in Europe and have been looking for one for about 18 months, good original ones are hard to come across here

I'm not naming anyone but I never saw so many 57/58 GTs with black guards and salad before the last ten years or so. I can't believe that's because people were hiding them? The cream surrounds values have something to do with the "lions share" of these black guard GTs, IMHO.
I suspect that many of those started life with P-90's. That is the point of my post of my experience with a guitar I owned in the late 70's, 8 1073 a P-90 guitar. I believe there has been a slow erosion of the 57's to be more humbucker guitars. I suspect this is more "manufactured" reality do to many things like Gibson's refusal to make the guitars we wanted until the early 80's coupled with the "crazy money" these were and still are worth. This is why guitars like my 1960 do not have the original parts, they went to increase to pool.

Tom,
I posted some in "8 1073 where are you now?". I owned the guitar in the late 1970's and traded it in at Ax-in Hand on Nov 1979.

I think you made a great trade. Three digits off my first Burst, which I still love and play. :salude

BTW: I met Larry because he heard about me buying my Burst, after I got it [1975] but before I started my store [1976]. Visiting his shop in the late 70s was a trip! :wow

does a 52 to 57 conversion count? It's Charlie Daughtry's ex guitar: https://www.ebay.de/itm/Vintage-Gib...232773156923?_trksid=p2385738.m4383.l4275.c10

Isn't the owner a member here? I wonder why it isn't listed here and why the auction is a no reserve one. I wish he lived closer, I'd be there to check it out, I really like the guitar
Seems the auction was completed with a winning bid slightly under $3000? Seems a once-in-a-lifetime deal for the buyer (and significantly less so for the seller) if it really sold for that amount.

The GT market must be healthy. It seemed that just a couple years ago, you were hard pressed to find one for over 100k.

Now if we can only get Customs back up to pre 2008 levels!

Reading through this I'm wondering if some of the GTs and refins out there are not vintage LPs............... as there are a lot available.
