• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Could anybody please be kind and identify the SG Bob Welch is playing?

Found some Fleetwood Mac clips from 1973 and hoped that someone would give me info on the SG.

It looks to be a Polaris White SG from (I'm guessing) either 1961, 63 or 64. It's definitely a Les Paul SG (the SG was meant as a replacement for the Les Paul until Les Paul himself wanted his name removed), and In most photos and videos, he has the PAF pickup covers removed, presumably for a brighter tone.

Most of his guitars wound up in Gruhn Guitars in Nashville in the early 2000s, and I believe some of it was also given to Fleetwood Mac technician Ray Lindsey.
Here is the SG pictured below. Bob Welch always liked humbucking guitars, and most notably Gibsons for that matter, especially modified ones.

And check out the modified Norlin Les Paul Bob Weston is playing in the above video.

I hope this video (and accompanying photo) will shed some light on the SG Bob Welch is playing. Thanks!
I do think Bob Welch should have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame as a Fleetwood Mac member.
It is also a shame that Bob Weston was sacked from Fleetwood Mac, ostensibly for having sexual intercourse with Mick Fleetwood's wife. Who knows if Bob Weston would have had a longer tenure had he not done that?

My guess would be between a 61 or a 62
I am not so sure about that but that tail piece was not in production until late 63, so not a 61 62 or 63. Although the image has poor resolution I think that if the tenon cover just says Custom it is after the Les Paul (SG) series had ended.. Most liKely a 65 or 66 SG Custom given that late style TRC

Here is the time line according to AD in the Gibson Electrics book:

1961 LP Std/Custom body shape changes to double cut. Possibly some from 1960. Side pull vibrato. LP markings go from the headstock to the truss rod cover on Stds; from the TRC to the plate covering the neck joint on Customs
1962 Side pull and ebony block vibratos available
1963 Side pull, ebony block and long Maestro vibratos available. Last of the LPs, now called SG.
1964 Long vibrato only
1966 Small pick guard replaced with large guard. Pick-ups mounted in the PG instead of using rings.

I think BW's would have to be between 1963-66.

I’m finding myself nostalgic for the early 70’s recently. Not every gig was perfect and not all performers had been “Eagleized” yet. Not even the Eagles.
