Cloudy Headstock

I have a 2003 Epiphone Les Paul that has had cloudy paint in just the front of the headstock since new. I actually really like the look of it. I think it makes it look vintage and unique, but what causes this, is it a defect, or was it supposed to be made this way?

Yup.

Called "fisheye" because it usually just happens in spots. but that's what it is.
