• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Closest neck Shape to a 56 Historic

Hey Guys,
Wondering if anyone might have some thoughts to throw my way…
I have an 09 56 Historic GT LP which I absolutely love the neck profile of. It’s a nice rounded chunky neck but not huge baseball bat style, extremely comfortable to play.

I’m on the hunt for a new LP preferably something 90’s or 2000s and I would love a similiar neck shape ( I’m in Australia and second hand custom shop LP,s are not plentiful )
Is there a particular year reissue that has a similiar neck shape to the the 56 reissue that anyone knows of?
Or is just the usual thing with Gibsons no real consistency so keep trying necks till you find a cozy one ? 🤷‍♂️
Thanks for any ideas’
J

2014 R5, R6, R7, R8's had many that were large, stepping down from earlier to later.

My 2014 R4 is HUGE.

It is kinda cool that they are stepped Huge to standard 59 which is perfect for most peeps.

You can literally feel the slimming and refinement from one R year to the next on the ones I got.

Great to know…. I am thinking the R8 might be a happy medium for me as some R9’s seem quite slim, thanks for the info !

Yep, the 04+07 R7 tonequest had a nice shaped neck.

R4 w/humbuckers are so cool. I played one years ago and thought it was the best Les Paul I’d ever played. I didn’t have the cash at the time, so I didn’t buy it. But I still think about that guitar.

I call her "The Black Widow".

Spec'd M2M so I'd have the first issue Historic Select for 54, 55, 56 that they produced in 2016.

They are customer spec'd Historics.

Unfortunately this isn’t historically accurate. My buddy has a ‘52, I own a ‘54 and a ‘58 and played a bunch of ‘57-61. The ‘58s aren’t really that thick and many of the ‘59s are the size of V2 R0 necks with a little thicker at the 12th fret. The ‘52-54 fall somewhere between those. No gradual change in my experience

No, while I agree with your assessment about historical accuracy:

In
2013-2015 thats the way the factory built quite a few of them which was what the OP asked.

I have played more than a few originals and the 52 - 56's were all over the place (but generally a little chunkier on many).

I just wish I had dove in in the early 70's and bought a few.

They were hanging in most guitar shops back East unsold for a long time...

Yeah..no I know that Gibson has been devising the line this way for years. I wish instead they offered a couple beck sizes like they did for the R0 line. I bought several in the 80s and early 90s when they were still in the realm of affordabllity. You could still get bursts for $4000 at vintage dealers and less at pawn shops etc who didn’t know the difference between a burst and a normal Std.

I worked in a shop in the late 80s where we had a bunch of silver and black faced Fender amps and 60s Jaguars piled up in the back that we couldn’t give away at the time. I bought a 1970 plexi with a 4 x 12 slant front cabinet for $400. ….bought my first vintage LP ((converted ‘54 with PAFs and center seam flame top) for $200. Ahhh..good times
