Hello, all. Been browsing the LPF a few weeks when time permits- like it a lot. Anyways-- does anyone have a line on vintage (?) cases? I've got a '60 Special DC that I've had since about '66 and never had an original case for it. Haven't played it much since '70, but, since it's a piece of my being, I'd like to have the proper place for it. Beautiful guitar- great PU's- maybe it's time to put back into service again. It's in a case from the old Vox guitar line- when Artists Music (here in MI) went out of business in the 60's the had a load of cases they were dumping. One of them fit the Special really well. It's still in there. Help! What (which) case was THE one for that guitar?

Actually, two cases.
The more common softshell, brown "alligator" case like Jrs had, and the very collectable [i.e. Burst case] "Durabilt" brown hardshell.
I would recommend a late 70's Gibson Protector case [black plastic, with plastic latches] for caring around, and an "original" soft shell for collecting purposes.
Also consider, the brown reissue Lifton case [reissue of the "Durabilt"].
Good luck.

I really like the Protectors in principle, but I've owned two of them, and both had the plastic latches break. I've never had one with the metal latches, but I've had about enough of the plastic ones.

I had one with metal latches that I padded and tweaked to hold a Nighthawk. No problems at all, and that case wasn't babied.

I've never had a latch break on me yet. I have used dozens of them in the last 25 years and the one my player is in I have used continuosly for over 15 years. I keep waiting for the latch to break, and they keep working.
Just my luck, I guess. :tw59

The metal latch Protector is a different case, and the padding isn't as good.

I really think it's the first-generation Protectors that work. I'll be the first to admit that, if a latch goes, the case is done. But, man, the ones that work, ROCK!

A truck driving friend who lurks here, [Jeff, you signed up yet?], swears he can get them repaired. Says they still use the same latches on the inside of some Semi cabs, and they have a way to repair them. Mine aren't broken [;)] so I keep forgetting to ask him more about it. :##

Well, I know at least one friend he could win right away if he spilled the beans, because that SG Special of mine came in a Protector with a broken plastic latch. If I could repair that, I'd be thrilled.

Meanwhile, here's one for sale with a broken latch.

You could always rivet metal latches next to where the plastic ones were.

Some people do that, and I guess it works, but it ruins the case "aesthetic", doncha know? :lol2
