I finally caved and picked up an R7 GT. I was somewhat surprised when I opened the box and i was in a black historic case w/ purple lining and no flap to lay over the guitar. I was under the impression the Historics came with the brown case and pick lining w/ the flap.

Part of me is nostalgic for this case since it matches the one I had for my '70's Deluxe GT. At the same time I want to make sure that the correct case came with the guitar should I ever need to sell it (gasp).

Which case is it supposed to be?

The case you received is the official Custom/Art/Historic Division case and is correct. The brown cases with pink lining are Gibson USA now (they used to be used by the Custom Shop as well; if I recall, the switchover date was in 1997, but if not it was definitely by 1998).

Thanks, Mike. I figured it was right, but it just wasn't what I was expecting so I wanted to be sure. I trust the dealer I got it from, so it was more of a curiosity for me. In a way I'm kind of glad it matches the old purple lined Gibson case I had - it completes the picture of the one that got away.

Has anyone tried putting one of these cases in the hold on a flight? Or is this a complete no no?

Not that I have any particular flights in mind, or anything...

I wouldn't. Fact is, I wouldn't trust any standard guitar case on any flight with the possible exception of a hand check on a twin prop (which I wouldn't get on anyway) where I had it to the guy loading it up and after the flight he takes it out and hands it to me.

If you're gonna fly and check the guitar, either pack it in a box as you would to ship it, or invest in a flight case.
