• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

I am seeing prices drop hard on used Historics - its a "buyers market "

Did Gibson over produce them ?

If this trend continues I am going to pick me out a "Honey Dew " of a Les Paul - a real sweetie .....

Don't know about overproduce - especially when you're talking about used market. If new ones were hanging around for ages in shops and they were giving them away to get them out the door, we could talk about it.
What I think we're looking at is more of a market correction. When COVID hit, a lot of people were buying guitars and other leisure good to take up their time away from the rat race. Now that life is more back to normal (whatever normal is, these days) people are realizing that it;s a lot of work to learn guitar, and they're selling them off. Then comes the supply and demand theories of economics, when the supply is large, the prices go down.

that could be it - guitar is an extremely difficult instrument.
Oh sure you can Willy Wank and strum a few chords or play mindless Pentonic scales up and down the board with the distortion cranked like a pimple faced teenager at guitar center .... but to play like Wes Montgomery or Segovia - jeez the odds are about the same as making it in the London Symphony as the primary Oboe or French Horn player - in other words - good luck with that !

mean while enjoy yourselfs some wonderful Oboe ...... we got ourselves a buyers market !

This stuff goes in waves and we've hit a trough worldwide, some bargains to be had possibly.
However if there is a perceived 'drop' in used gear that's a good thing as since covid times hit us everything skyrocketed, and Gibson put up their prices 12-15%, demand exceeded supply.

here is just an example ........ 3800 bucks to start and the guy is open to offers

nice year ,,,,,,, nice and light ... dark finger board ..... some horizontal flame .... a few tiny marks - and nice after market pups

if he would take 3600 - thats not so bad in this day and age

if these 58s with hide glue and custom buckers drop to about 3200 that makes them pretty sweet

I think buyers are about to find themselves in a fantastic situation

That’s quite quite a few nicks and chips in/on that particular one for only a 4 year old guitar. I think that explains the price more than anything (as a matter of fact, I think it’s a bit overpriced considering its condition). The minty ones are still going for quite a bit more it seems.

1st of all, a 4+ year old R8 is not a $3800 guitar in a good market. And a 4 year old Historic that's starting to check?. No way. There has been some help in that area. Quite possibly why "the best guitar I've ever played" is being passed on.
I wouldn't want it for $2800.00.

as long as the neck or headstock has never been broken

I'm inclined to think, the steep rise of fuel pricing recently means some people can't afford to keep paying the credit card they used to buy the guitars, so they need the money fast.

I got my 57 reissue VOS from guitar center. It a 2021. The switch tip got broken and and got under the guitar. This caused slight impressions in the back of the guitar. Nothing drop fills would could not fix. Pieces of the switch tip was actually stuck in the back. The guitar was 3200 dollars plus tax. Guitar center refunded me 700 dollars to keep it and UPS gave me around 500 dollars in damage claims. I guess I paid around 2200 for it with tax and everything for damage you cant see while playing the guitar. I have seen some good deals out there.

Maybe you should go back and read my post again.
I made mention of having an issue with a 2018 Historic that's already "checking". I don't know what kind of experience you have with these guitars, but ( again, as I wrote) a 4 year old guitar should not be checking.
Reading between the lines, would indicate that the owner achieved this on his own. So yes, I wouldn't pay anything near his asking price. I've seen and worked on quite a few guitars that had "homemade" checking and fading.
Sloppy attempts with razor blades, freezers, compressed air-hair dryers, leaving outside on a freezing cold night, leaving outside in direct sunlight..etc Doing that causes issues with other things as well. Then you have the value, re-sale value as well.
And what do you mean $2600? and 2013? You wrote 2018 .

the seller says you can see the checking in the pictures. I can't see any checking and didn't expect to see any checking.

The perfect guitar is always a few hundred more than I am willing to spend- but I spend it anyway.
This is the way.
The regrets I have are for guitars I did not buy due to them beeing a bit too highly priced… I ended up paying more down the line every time…
