• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

so I have a number of questions... hopefully you will help me learn...

I've read a lot where when recording, guitarists opt to go straight into the board. I'm assuming that means guitar -> preamp. meaning no amp, speaker cab, mic, room, etc.

Since you have access to all manner of options, what are the differences? For a bedroom musician that has pro tools or logic on a laptop, would it be just as beneficial to buy say a 1073 pre/eq (or clone) and plug the guitar straight into that as it is to plug into an amp? what kind of differences would one experience?
