Better tone with/without covers

What has your experience been: Better tone with covers or without?

I have found a smoother, less middy sound with covers.

The neck pickups sounds noticeably better covered.

I don't care for covers either, but I have to have them for the look on my SG.
I'll modify Billy Crystals old saying to:

"Its better to look good than to sound good"
