• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Another sadly misinformed...

Here's yet another out-to-lunch ebayer who thinks he has something wild. Just where do these poor souls come from???
The guy is offering what is just a regular honey burst LP Standard from 1998, mind you left handed is a bit on the rare side in this finish, but no big deal. For example Centre City Music has a variety of new LH Les Pauls including I think a honey burst Standard, no sweat.
Canuck Lefty and I both noticed this for auction on ebay a little while back from somebody in the Ottawa Ontario area, it went for around 1200, that's reasonable. The guy who bought it is now offering it and thinks it's worth 3500+ ???? What is he smoking???

He claims to have spoken to someone at Gibson and makes it sound like someone there is backing his claims about this guitar. Is it possible somebody at Gibson would mislead someone THIS MUCH? Jesus H for something in the area of 3500 you could grab one of the two Historic LH '58 reissue LP figure tops that Gruhn has...
I'm tempted to email him to let him know he is seriously mistaken, but should I even bother?... I mean it's one thing when somebody is totally out of touch, but it seems even weirder to me when you have someone like this who sort of has half his brain up his *ss. Could he really be this confused or it he just blowing smoke and hoping he can con somebody???

Brian - I think bottom feeders, such as this guy, know exactly what they're doing. They're con artists pure and simple, operating in a free-for-all environment where there is no law against using outrageous hype to separate outrageous sums of money from outrageously stupid, gullible people. They know that there exists individuals with more money than brains, who are susceptible to hype such as his, (you've seen other auctions with similar language) and it's just a matter of time before one of them bites. (the big one, so to speak)

The basic principles are taught in any good Business School.

Hey Heinz ya liked that part about that so called price quote?
What about "I really don't want to sell"?, and what's with the "Let's do the Rattlesnake Shake bid!", does that mean he is looking to bite somebody seriously in the ass rattlesnake style?? :lolspin

I recall once seeing a "fake" auction setup by someone who probably was so annoyed at some con job being attempted in some auction that he setup another with a similar title just to draw attention to his auction and expose the con in his auction text.
It also occurred to me to maybe setup a one-time use ebay id with a username of "you_are_out_of_your_mind" and bid to blow his auction.
Then again, I suppose two wrongs don't make a right, but it IS tempting to do...

What is this seller trying to do? He has tons of positive feedback and so on the face of it appears reputable. Also, look at his other autions. Quite a few of them are for other lefty guitars so I reckon he does know his stuff. It just appears that this time he is trying to pull a fast one.

Hmmm..

I agree, he seems genuinely convinced he's found some sort of grailburst
but i hear that smoking Japanese knotweed can have this effect

It seems that most auctions on ebay for guitars are for "rare" instruments. Lets face it, there arent that many rare Les Pauls, SGs, Strats, etc. If they are rare, it seems the seller would be better off selling to someone that deals in rare, vintage instruments. I saw an ebay ad once for a rare, late seventies LP Custom. The reason for the rare designation was that it was Tobacco Sunburst, that was a popular color by any stretch. Another annoying thing about this "rarity" thing is that there may be two or more guitars just like the purported rare instrument!

1959burst, you must have developed a fair bit of patience for this foolishness, hope he listens to your advice.
As to his "grailburst" and just how rare it is, yeah sure you are not exactly going to see dozens of these in LH hanging around at just any store, but any of the major dealers such as those in the Boulevard would probably be able to get one. Currently Centre City is showing on their site that they have not one but TWO of that exact guitar... end of story...
