• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Anybody have any experience with these amps? I have been wanting a new amp and these have me curious? Especially the Beagle and the Black& Tan.

They kill...

I don't have any first-hand experience with the Beagle (I'd like to check one of these out) or the Black & Tan, but I have a Redbone Special and recently sold a Redbone Coonhound. The Redbone amps are skull-splitters, sorta like Plexi meets Trainwreck meets flamethrower. They kill with a 'Paul. Heard good stuff about George's EL84 amps, but haven't tried one. Yet... ;)

Have a Bloodhound with 6550's and and English, love them to death. The BH does the VH1/Moore thing and the English does bell like chime, couldn't be happier. No experience with the Beagle or B&T, but I'd figure they're pretty good considering the source.;)

I do have an English for sale over at the members section.

TheEnglish and Beagle are basically the same, except that the Beagle has 2 EL84's for 10 watts, and the English has 4-EL84's for 20 watts. Thse ratings are misleading as well, since George A rates his amps before any significant distortion, so they are MUCH louder than the ratings would indicate.

Cheers

I would like to have V-verbs English but I think it is too loud for my purposes? I have been using 20 watt amps and they are plenty loud enough. Everyone tells me that the English is almost as loud as an AC30? I already have an AC30 that is a perfect amp except it's too loud. I don't like attenuators. I expect to like the Alessandro amps? But I need one about the volume of a 60s AC15.

What about the Plotthound? Isn't that ten watts? It seems like a cool little amp. but I never see them used. New, they list for $2400.00 which is way too steep. Or, find an old beat champ/vibrochamp which is class A and can be surprisingly loud thru a 2x10 4ohm cab.

Yes but the English does start to get "crunchy" at about 11 o'clock on the volume control - much lower in volume than my Vox AC10 had to be before it started to overdrive.

As the AC15 is louder than an AC10, I would bet that the English would overdrive at a much lower volume than an AC15. You basically have to listen to the amp, but I was surprised at how gainy the amp is and how nicely it cleans up with the guitar's volume control being rolled up.

The Plott is a 6V6 amp which would have a different character than the EL84 English and Beagle.

Sorry about the spam. Too bad George's amps aren't better known though.

Cheers

Nigel, I am tempted. I would bet the English is everything I have heard about it? The JMI AC15 has a good thick sound from 0 all the way up. The only complaints I have about it are that the tone controls do not do much so it is hard to clean the amp up for a humbucker in the neck position. What it does, it does perfectly. The other problem is that they are old and I had rather haul around a newer amp for gigs.

I am interested and still thinking about your amp but I hate to have you send it and then I send it back. I hate to do that as I am not sure the amp will work for me?

Larry, I have a blackface champ, 3 tweed champs and a Vox tube Pathfinder. These amps don't do much for me. They record well but when compared to a 10 watt amp such as an AC10 or tweed Harvard they sound woefully thin. The 10 watters are not much louder and are way better amps to my ears. I tend to like the champs until I plug into something a bit bigger and then I put the champs up for another good while.....

At lower volumes the vibro can sound thinner, but at higher volumes I think the most limiting factors are the size of the cabinet and the 8" speakers. This was demonstrated to me when I ran my vc through the 2x10 speakers of my vibrolux. It really opened up the sound and made it much fuller and LOUDER. I also can hear a little bit of Marshall swirling around in my stock vc which is why I posted the question I did on the other thread. I have no experience w/ original ac15's or ac30's but I would love to get my hands on a watkins dominator.:smokin

60burst -

I have a Plott and Bluetick (4x6v6 - an English w/ 6v6s.) Great amps. Got the Bluetick because I needed more clean headroom.

You may want to consider the Black N Tan - sounds like a killer amp. 15w, optimized for 2xEL34, cathode biased. You can use various output tubes: EL34, 6L6, KT66, 6V6. I will probably be replacing the Plott with a BnT.
