• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Hi:)
Has anyone tried out these neck shapes?

I can't decide between a 2018 SG Standard or a 2018 LP Traditional.
I have quite big hands, and i fear that the Slim Taper is to "small" in my hands.

I live pretty far away from a decent guitarstore, thats the reason why i'm asking this question.

Thanks.

Consider this....

I have small hands.

The guitars I play most are V's and a Junior, with thin necks.

Very comfortable to play ever day.

But the guitar that sounds the best?

My R4 GT with a beer can neck.

If my house caught on fire and I could only save one guitar...

The R4 is it.

Many here like big necks I have neck profiles all over the board I would not shy from slim taper at all !

My Historic Firebird necks are large but not like a large Les Paul they are in their own profile class .

My one USA Firebird has a very slim neck and is a comfortable guitar to play .

You could find a slim neck works !

It took over 40 years for me to learn since i have inherited the stubby fingers of my mother: its not the thickness its the shoulders of the neck. With less shoulders and rolled binding (a bit smaller width and a smaller fingerboard radius helps too), i can play even an inch thick necks. The thicker they are, the more pronouced have to be the V like shape.
To answer the question straight: i bought 2010 LP tribute just to have a P90 guitar. The rounded 50ies neck was a nightmare, but i loved the sound. I shaved off the shoulders and rolled the binding, but i did not touch the thickness (round .95). Its dream to play.

I have XL hands and have had several Les Pauls, Historic and Standards with '50's style necks. Never bonded with any of them. Bought a Traditional sight unseen with the slim taper and never looked back. Love the slim taper. The only guitar I would even consider replacing it with would be an R0.
