The black back was standard for Desert Burst which is what you most likely have. Along with perimeter bursting on top.

You're very welcome. I'm a very big fan of all the darker bursts. They are not discussed with as much forensic detail as are all the micro shades and various faded degrees of Cherry Burst so any burst with a brownish tint just gets called Tobacco Burst, (not used until the 70's. 50's dark brown burst finish was the classic Gibson burst offically called Sunburst Finish), regardless the factory stock designation.

Desert Burst was a pretty color and popular. I've heard of some with walnut finished backs but all that I've seen had black backs and the perimeter shaded top. Tobacco Burst, a very dark, almost black bown shade usually had the classic pear or teardrop top shading pattern and a walnut stained back, sometimes with a shaded heel.

Scotch Burst, Antique, Honey and Vintage Bursts have all been used as factory names for various brown tinted sunbursts yet you'll often see them simply referred to as Tobacco Bursts. Love to see pics if you have them.

I just borrowed the guitar from a friend. I had if for over a year now. I knew it was a Standard. I never ask about the color. If I would have known I would have been able to find it on google. lol

I mistakenly called it tobacco. I have had several Les Pauls and all but one were cherry bursts.

Since I learned what it is I did some more google searches. I think it is a Standard Plus Top. It's a really good sounding guitar.

Out of curiosity Big Al, what was the purpose of the dark shaded heel on the back of the TB LP?

It looked odd to me when i first saw it.
I don't know. I think it started with the older archtops and became something they just did. You see it on the 50's Jrs too.

Thanks for the reply Al.

I know you know A LOT about the Gibson factory process, so I figured if anyone would know, it would be you.
