Concerning the pick guard nicks and checking, does any of the checking continue under the pick guard? Would "real" checking stop at the pick guard?

Mostly.

Checking on old guitars may or may not continue under the guard.

I have nothing to add, either. But I would like to donate some time & effort to push the thread into 10 pages

Success! :salude

A thread always reaches a point of diminishing returns, and I think this one is just about there. To the extent that there are "two sides" in this argument, I want to make sure everyone has had their say. So if you want to add something meaningful, now it the time to do it.:jim

Perhaps another plot twist is only a few posts away.

I did however once make a lefty similar styled guitar for a friend but that now, has “Dwight” on the headstock because I own that name. It was also different in construction and internal routes intentionally! So it could never have been confused as a Gibson.

Clive Brown

Thanks for clearing this up Clive.

I have some questions, but please forgive my ignorance, as these might be glaringly obvious to others here. Concerning the pick guard nicks and checking, does any of the checking continue under the pick guard? Would "real" checking stop at the pick guard?

Also, knowing that Gibson recording keeping is incomplete, but does the serial# match any Gibson production ledgers?

On my heavily checked Goldtop, the checking "slows down" and eventually stops under the pickguard, even though the pickguard is not hard against the finish.

The checking on the Explorer doesn't seem to be very detailed. Whereas the goldtop is very fine. Is that common? Perhaps because of the Korina's porous grain vs the maple top? Or, as i think Eric suggested...it was induced/enhanced or created artificially?

don't know, just asking for my own information.

Well since we have all these Explorer experts here, I have a quick question please since no one answered my post. Has anyone ever seen a factory truss rod cover that says "explorer" in script like les paul script?

Charlie,
This could have all been avoided if your moderator would have caught all the bull shit in the first 5 or so threads. I was asked to come to this forum. It was not my idea. I was told that is would be fair and somewhat balanced. Not so... Not that the LPF owners were a bit lopsided, you had members that had been band, yet you let them back on even after your partners advice... But, I get it... A floundering forum is no good for the crew or the advertisers... So, 500-600 hits is good. I want $50.00, please. Again, this my guitar. If you don't have 750k, go away. My guitar, 750k or go away. Charlie, you of all people know this guitar and where it's been to be authenticated... You should have reveled that and stopped this right then and there. Instead you let Richard Henry, John Marlow berate the shit out of close friends of ours... The weird thing is why didn't they come after me? My guitar. 750K, go away. Eric H. Ernest is the only one I have a bone to pick, as he doesn't has the testicles to call. I've talked to Henry, John, Tom Clark Kent and about every other human that spent time having a chat...
So seeing how this will be my last post, as the owners refuse to control the people who have been banned before, you've' let a few wankers screw it up for all of us... I was whacked and told to watch my ass as I was trying just trying to defend myself. I certainly don't need a 90% bunch of wanna bee's telling me what to say or do. i.e. "does the case smell old?" The pickguard has a booger on it...!!!" Weird...!!!
Ok, after texting John Marlow today... Hold it...Let's back up. John had told me Perry was gonna call me last weekend and that never happened. As John stated to me Perry matched my guitar it up with 10-17 Explorers...?? That many....!!! Wow....!!! That went on for over 2 or 3 days, no call from Perry... First and foremost why would Perry want to call me...? He does enjoy my acoustic strings, I must say...
Ok, here's what needs to happen. Myself & K.K.K., John, Richard, Max, Rick, Joe, Clive, Graham, Sean, Albert, Gil, Scott, Tom fly to meet Perry in N.Y. at his discretion to pull just a few out to match up and let the cards lay as they may. I've talked to Clive & Graham and they are willing to fly to N.Y. to meet John and have Perry ID. this guitar as John has said Perry's seen it and matched it up to the many that Perry owns. Now, this will put it to bed... Does all agree? Say yay or nay? Sorry Charlie, you can come and bring your fellow Explorer mate... CHARLIE, PLEASE LEAVE THIS UP FOR A SPELL SO EVERYBODY GETS THE GIST... Big Hern 619-988-9777

Yes, please call Big Hern... The Kid 619-988-9777
Just wanted to acknowledge this. Thanks for your invitation to a complete stranger Big Hern.:)

But, I assure you that I'm nobody from nowhere. A phone call from me would be a big WTF Moment on your part. :laugh2:

I wish you luck on the sale of your lovely guitar and hope I haven't interfered in any way.
I meant no disrespect by my participation in this thread. I'm just a curious fellow in both senses of the word. Now I will zip it and sit quietly over here to the left. :eek:la

Dude, what is this?

If I've told you once, I've told you a dozen times, I'm not my brother's keeper, he's his own guy. What I undertook to do was to give him the heads up that you might call to talk about this guitar while he was in London, which is exactly what I did. If you want to talk to him, pick up your phone and dial the number. Why is that so hard? No Chinese whispers. If you own the guitar, then it's you that needs help figuring out what you have. Ask for a favour and he might agree to discuss the guitar, although I've got no idea why he would want to be drawn into this cluster-fuck. 17 Explorer's? That's not even worthy of a response.

As we texted a couple of hours ago, why would I drop $15k flying into NY to see a guitar I don't own and don't want to buy? As I've also said in this thread, on the phone, and via text......I wouldn't know a real korina Explorer from a hole in my ass. Still, if you stump for a ticket (left-turn at the door type) and a decent hotel I'll come subject to diary.

For the umpteenth time, why don't you take the guitar to the korina guy in LA? He's pretty local to you and I'm told knows these guitars as well as anybody. If you think the guitar is straight, what's the downside?

I'm glad my calls are recorded. I'll organise to have a copy sent to you tomorrow Hern, as a refresher.

Nice dinner BTW.

A good friend just told me I've got better things to be doing than this. Wise indeed.

U told me some kid was gonna look at it. Some kid had looked at it and some kid was gonna call me to no avail. Don't puss out now. You were the big shot before. Don't let us down. All show and no go make John a fraud, so man up... As you you're looking pretty whimpy in the U.S.A...!
