Rob, why are you attacking me?
John and I are having a serious discussion, and you want to turn it into a pissing match? :bigal

Tom, I had no intention of attacking you, perhaps I should have edited John's comment to more specifically reflect the intention of my own. Apologies if I offended you, but there was no intent at all. Here it is:

Let me pose you a rhetorical question. If you were in the business of making and/or refinishing guitars to mimic genuine original vintage instruments as closely as you were able, would you knowingly take commissions from the most notorious villains in the guitar business if you so much as suspected that they would pass them off as genuine and unaltered vintage guitars?

Or, to put it another way, is anybody reading this thread in the market for a vintage custom colour Strat?

We all know who he is talking about, right?

...but I'm skeptical ( as already pointed out) that anyone with any sense would attempt such a thing with the pickguard on

The boundary of checking at the headstock wing is also puzzling.

Here's one possible explanation: Maybe the guitar didn't check enough on that side of the pickguard, so they went back and razor bladed it there to fix it.....lots of possible explanations.

1960_gibson_explorer_case.jpg

Why would they do this? It's not even close to looking correct? Obviously a re-lined Baldwin case.

Why do you find the boundary of the headstock wing puzzling?

Sorry I wasn't clear Eric. I meant the checking starting/stopping at the join. That could indicate something...what I'm not sure. I have no opinion on this one way or the other, but as I said I think the alignment with the pickguard scratches may or may not be indicative of distressing. I can't conceive of anyone with any experience whatsoever leaving on the guard while attempting that kind of relicing. Not challenging your contention, just following a line of reasoning.

I'm just musing outloud really. I don't pretend to have anywhere near the knowledge or experience you guys have. :)

Well, there a long list of "can't conceive(s)" on this instrument. :hee :salude

Well...I'd say the next step, if this really is an honest and transparent sale, would be for B.H. b/b to show his GIANT testes and call the two people he already mentioned by name and get the opinion of people who actually KNOW these guitars, have BOUGHT, SOLD and OWNED multiples of these guitars, rather than trust the word of a couple of REPLICA builders. One of the named even knew the guitar before Kirk bought it.

Big Hernia, here comes the cavalry, call GILVIS!!!!!!!!! ~ he offered to help the last owner out a while back. You know, the guy who got duped by one of your STAND UP 1%ers. Anyway THE KING said he'd even sell his signature so you got's to call him. And HE is the KING!!!!!!!! You won't have to kiss his ring but you owe it to yourself and the guitar. Or is he on your shit list too because he said something you don't like?

You STAND behind a guitar when you SELL a guitar, not when you write a letter saying 'in my professional opinion I believe this to be.........blah blah with no ACCOUNTABILITY in any way. Smells like 9 0623 all over again. Wheres SOUTHWORTH. We need him here. Ted Nugent paging the Fruity one..........

I'm calling you again today... answer

Don't. I will not discuss a guitar of this controversy, history, and expense on the phone.

If you have something to say, put it writing. Nothing against you, Gary. This is my policy in matters such as this. Too much "he said, she said."

Re: 1960 Gibson Korina Explorer " Kandye Kane " Guitars West Owned on ebay

I however do own a flip phone, a pickup truck, am surrounded by gently rolling hills....and like corn. I guess that makes me some kind of hayseed?:laugh2:

Football? Meh.

I'm not an expert by any stretch of the imagination...but am well acquainted with very old finishes and 'distressing' reproductions on request. Not guitars.

The point about the alleged razor marks may or may not be true...but I'm skeptical ( as already pointed out) that anyone with any sense would attempt such a thing with the pickguard on, and that would indicate that said alignments would be random. The boundary of checking at the headstock wing is also puzzling.

I'll wait a while for my nickname. Some of you guys are automatically disqualified from nominations due to chances of prior bias.

Forgive me for chiming in on something that isn't my bidness...but it's a public forum right? I don't mean to be presumptuous...I'm just chronically chatty. :##

Btw. Anybody mind if I call Big Hern.? :)

Yes, please call Big Hern... The Kid 619-988-9777

BH b/b, It is obvious you know nothing about where I live. I don't own a flip phone, nor a pickup truck and I don't really care for corn. There is not a hill in sight and I am not a football fan. I'll give you a C+ for effort.

Darn it Tom... I thought I was spot on... Did you get the Clark Kent thing yet? M/O/G? BH

Oh...please no! :laugh2:

I absolutely do not possess that. I'm flattered though. :)

Just a ponderer. Point by point. I have zero knowledge of such relics except what
I have read, and you know what that's worth. I bow to others' experience in such matters, with no leanings one way or t'other as a preconception. I do find the whole thing very interesting as I dealt with antiques for years. I aspired to luthery but couldn't take the long road of starting up. Antiques were ubiquitous and clients as well...so being the materialistic and pragmatic pig that I am went that route.

The whole subject of fakery and provenance is very interesting to me. I don't presume to all the background necessary to make definitive judgments in this sort of thing. And by chiming in mean no disrespect to those that do.

The nuance of parts and wear to a manufactured piece make it even more difficult. In my case the finish itself would be a big tell, and probably the only one I would be somewhat knowledgable about.

For instance, color is easy enough to match (for some!) but in my experience the depth or holographic effect that results from the photoreactive properties of lacquer over time is hard to fake. If others have experience in how to do that I'd like to know. Because hiding a patch or repair on an old piece...that right there is the difficult part.

You are calling me a bastard and a swine. Hernia, with all due respect, you are way out of order. If your only means of defence for this guitar is to shout the loudest and throw the most insults, then you are winning the battle. However, it is clear to everyone, you are not winning the war. The truth will always overcome.

It was not my intention to attack Tom, I have no reason to do that whatsoever, and I have also apologised to Tom for any offence I may have inadvertently caused. I have explained in my subsequent post what my intent was.

As for getting my phone number, you may or you may not, but I am really not interested in talking to you on the phone at this juncture. In fact, what on earth would that achieve?

However, I am really curious about the threesome tiny loaves.....tell me more, it sounds like fun.
