• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

    Euro Trolls Explained (Maybe)

Canadian here: Our health care is not great. I am 58 and have no family doctor. I endure long waits in the hope of seeing a doctor at a walk in clinic. The wait for elective surgery (knees, hips etc.) can be years. The only plus is it costs me nothing when I see a doctor or if I need surgery. I...

    RIP Charlie Watts

Yeah, this hits hard. My favourite drummer for reasons I find hard to explain. There are some songs (most I suppose) where the kick and snare just sound perfect to my ear. So simple, unpolished, keeping the slightly out of time crew in the groove. I am thankful as a Stones fan that he was at...

Do you think guitar music will ever be great like it was from 1954 to 1979?

I think there will always be good guitar music, but it will be a niche market. The young generations coming along have moved on to other things.

    OD advice

My Blues Jr III sounds a little too harsh with my humbuckers when I go for some gain. I like what my BD2 sounds like with a low gain setting, but not a fan of what happens when I turn it up. So I was thinking of stacking a pedal to provide a warm crunch when I need it. Does anyone have a...

    Amp EQ all rolled off

I didn't know that about ACDC, interesting. I have since tweaked the EQ some more and I don't have everything rolled off but definitely below 12:00, treble just barely registering at about 8:00.

    Amp EQ all rolled off

This was my thought too. Noodling around on my own is one thing, but in a mix it will probably fail. I have been playing with controls like a mad scientist trying to tame the harshness when I OD my BJ3. It seems like the BD2 is great for low gain, but for higher gain I think I need to do...

    Amp settings

Right, plus I think when I'm playing on my own the harshness is more evident. A rhythm section would help. I like to play with just my fingers sometimes and that also makes it better.

    Amp settings

Hi and welcome. I have a similar set up, LP Standard and Blues Junior III with a Cannabis Rex speaker. I have had the best success with having the Master way up and use the Volume to control loudness, along with the guitar volume. I can get some great Blues/Jazz tones with my LP and my DOT...

    Amp EQ all rolled off

Does anybody play with the treble, bass, and mids all rolled off and use just guitar tone? I was playing with EQ and started at 0 for everything and it sounds pretty good. Master and Volume up, Reverb to taste and BD3 gain at 10:00 It seems weird, but I kind of like it

Has the smell of new USA Gibsons changed?

Did you buy the 1989 new? My 1985 Standard that I bought new had the most pleasant aroma I've ever experienced. Lasted for several years, but eventually faded away.

Amps you sold but should have kept

The 2204 in my avatar. I bought it brand new in 1983 but in the 35 years I owned it I never really got to play it the way it should be played so I sold it a couple of years ago. It was a decoration in my house, so I hope it's getting 'rode hard' in its new home.

Thoughts on compression to tame bite.

Yeah I did some more experimenting last night. Rolling off the tone helps but I wonder if I'm using the BD2 in the wrong way. I like the subtle rich tone it gives when the gain is dialled at 10 O'clock, but for more grit if I roll that on more, or use the amp FAT or Volume control, I still get...

Thoughts on compression to tame bite.

LP through BD2 to Blues Junior with Cannabis Rex speaker. I turn the Master way up and control loudness with Volume control, and this results in a nice tone to my ears. I use the BD2 gain on about 10 o'clock and so if I want some crunch I use guitar volume and attack. The problem is my...

LP Standard specs through the years?

Yeah I see how that can be a near impossible task. It would be interesting to have a database where anyone that has a stock LP could input whatever information they had so we could see a representation of all the possibilities by year.

LP Standard specs through the years?

I thought there was a pinned thread on this site that summarized all the differences in spec and hardware through the years, but I can't find it anymore. Maybe it was embedded in another thread? The website that covers all the Traditional models is very informative and I would love to see a...

    Help 1986 les paul standard

Jules. I have an 85 Standard, I bought it new. When I joined this forum 16 years ago I had a lot of questions. And somebody (might have been Big Al) told me to do some research. So I did, and I realized it doesn't matter. I love my guitar and will never sell it. After all these years I don't...

    Tube amp noise - Help

Blues Jr., just had my EL84's replaced. Brought it home and sounded great. Today went to play and there is a distorted buzz every time I pluck a string. It lasts until the note fades a bit and then is gone. It happens whether or not the amp it set up clean or with gain. Any ideas? Could it be a...

What scale is San Ho Zay lead played in?

There are a lot of 8 - 10 fret notes played on the A D and G strings, sort of like the A-minor blues scale at the 5th fret, but I don't see any scales that use the 8th and 10th fret like that. It sounds very bluesy and I can ride in that pocket over a C major jam for quite a while. I don't know...

    Tension and resolution notes.

When playing simple phrases in Blues, sometimes I hit a bad note. In the middle of the phrase it is easier to recover, but at the end it just kills the mood. My question is this: What are the safe tension and resolution notes in a given key?

What settings do you use on your Blues Junior (or similar)

For a slightly crunchy blues sound that I can solo with, I have a foot switch for the FAT channel, and I have borrowed a Maxon OD808. Here are my questions. 1. Does the FAT switch boost the preamp tubes, the big tubes or all of them? Is it doing the exact same thing as the OD pedal? 2. Is it...
