• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Finish Damage

Hey everyone, I received an Epiphone IBG Les Paul 60’s Standard last week. I bought it used on Reverb in mint condition. After finally picking it up at the UPS holding office (couldn’t be home to sign for the package) I got it home, took it out, and noticed it had been damaged during shipping. I was able to get a full refund and when I asked about getting a return label to ship it back to the seller, the rep told me I could go ahead and keep the guitar, so now I’m interested in repairing it. The cracks go all the way through the finish, but I’m not sure if it actually cracked the wood at all. The finish could easily peel away, but I’m not sure how to go about repairing it once it inevitably starts flaking off. Any ideas to repair it to the point that it would look decent? What about if the wood is cracked? I’m not expecting perfection. Thanks!

I have no idea about fixing it BUT, I kinda think it looks cool!
Maybe leave it alone and let it age naturally? Who knows?

Thanks! I don’t mind leaving it, honestly. Just wasn’t sure if the binding will start to peel eventually. Guess I could always sand it down and spray a thin coat of acrylic.

Free guitar.
Sweet.
If you want to stabilize it, dribble some water-thin cy (super) glue into the cracks.
A refinish would only be worth it if you are interested in really investing in learning how to refinish guitars.

This might be the way to go. I’m definitely not looking to do a refin. Just looking to stop the cracks from spreading. Thanks for the recommendation!
