• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

How long did it take Tom Murphy to age a guitar?

I've tried a search but it's hard to set the parameters to what may have given me an answer.

Does anyone know how long it took TM to age a guitar? From lite aging to heavy?

I could see a master doing a lite in an hour or so, and a heavy take 6+... maybe I'm way off.

Depends how busy or responsive the subcontractors are.

Yeah, I'm talking about before Labs. I don't blame him for teaching others how to do his thing. There will be some shining stars coming out of that. Gibson is taking a page out of Fender's Master Built book...

But that doesn't answer the question.

All that aside, I’m curious as to how long something like that might take.

It all depends on what you are working with when you attack a relic/aging project and what level of relic you want to pursue. Type of wood, paint thickness, and all kinds of factors enter in.... no definitive answer here. Every guitar is it's own entity.......

I guess he used more time on a guitar earlier, than he uses today on the assembly line.

Other than Tom's razor method, how is the finish cracking achieved? I've assumed they are using nitro without the plastic (plasticizing?) agents, putting the bodies into some sort of freezer (for how long?), taking them out and warming them up somehow. Somebody feel free to set me straight and/or elaborate!
