Can't decide between OX4 Medium vs Low wind pickups

Hi

after reading and listening everything on Youtube, I have make up my mind for a set of OX4 pickups to fit in my R9.

But I cannot decide between low wind and medium wind.

I usually go for medium wind pickups, but Mark at OX4 told me that almost 98% of their customers choose low wind.

Does anyone has compared both versions?

Well what do you want? There are reasons for the different winds. Choose the option that matches your need. If you don't know what you want in a pickup why change? I only change pickups if I feel disatisfaction with what I have. I know what I find undesirable and choose a replacement to correct my tone to get what I feel is more appropriate tone based on my needs.

If you have a reason to change you have your answer.

Maybe have another conversation with Mark, and talk about your specific needs, I'm fairly sure he'll give you all the information and guidance that he can.

One guy that will have definitely compared them is Mark!!

if you can afford it get both and sell one or store it. you'll lose a bit of money but it's the only way to be sure imho

My Two Cents for whatever it's worth is ThroBak- SLE -101 or SLE- 101 Plus which is a bit more hotter . Wound on the same machines that Gibson Used in KZOO and done in the same fashion and manner . I think they are the best thing to Vintage PAF's.

Ive had both versions of the OX4s . The low winds 7.1/7.7 bridge and the Carter Vintage Guitar set 7.8/8.3 bridge. They were both really good pickups but I preferred the slightly hotter Carter Vintage set. Really good pickups.

I already have a set of Throbak SLE 101 Plus in my Collings City Limits De Luxe, and those are great pickups, no doubt.

The issue is that I come from Europe, and the import taxes makes the Throbacks very pricy. The OX4 are manufactured in UK, so I do not pay import taxes, and the GBP is quite low now compared to €, and this makes the OX4 a great deal (les than half teh price of the Throbacks)

I've got low wind A4 OX4's in my 63RI 335, they sound great in there, very open and responsive and very clear with a lot of note separation and the way they feed back is great they really sing mine measure at 7.7 and 7.2. I really like what I got with those specific pickups in that particular guitar, the MHS pickups i took out measured at 7.9 and 7.3 so they're pretty similar in out put and they really sound very similar just a little more refined and more open. I found the stock MHS bridge a little nasal and muted and it felt kind of "squishy" hard to describe really more something that you felt when playing the guitar. When I was thinking about swapping out the pickups I knew what i was shooting for and mark was really helpful and I got exactly what I wanted so I'd echo what everyone else is saying and you need to know why your swapping the pickups out and what exactly your trying to achieve. Case in point I'm probably going to be swapping out the pickups in my R8 at some point and I'm looking at putting in either OX4 hot Duane's or perhaps something from Wizz in a similar vein of higher wind probably with A5 magnets again I kind of know what I'm shooting for and what I'm trying to achieve and the kind of sound I'm shooting for.

The ox4 sets I have had were mediums. Great sounding pups. Mine had covers and the bridge pups would all feed back too much at stage volume. I popped the cover on the pup and put 3 dabs of silicone on the non screw bobbin, problem solved with no effect on sound. My favorite paf type pups!

Big Al is spot on with what he posted ... if 1 set vs. another suites your playing demands more.. go with those . I bought a set of OX4's , Low Output Winds, a few years back and I'm very happy with them ..For me, a never sell set of Pups ... Either way, i don't think you'll go wrong .

I have a set of OX4's medium wind / Alnico V magnets... sounds very bright and "fat" at the same time...

Well I have never tried OX4 pickups, but I have had a medium output PAF and two different low wind sets from James @ Rewind, and the low outputs are just fantastic. I was leary at first but glad I did it. Amazing definition in note seperation and they sound like a million bucks.

I have three sets Low, regular, and Hot Duane. All three are really great. I would recommend that you listen to clips and buy the ones you like the best. My first set was low winds. I was playing a Les Paul through a Tweed Fender Harvard amp. The Harvard is a little bit dark so I needed brighter pickups. If you have a darker amp, they are a great way to go. Of course they sound great with brighter amps as well. I love OX4 pickups. Can't go wrong. The Hot Duanes are in an SG. They made a thin sounding guitar sound like a beast. My regular winds are in a Epiphone Dot (ES335 type guitar) and they sound great.

How do the medium winds and the Hot Duane’s compare? I just ordered the medium winds. Are they good for AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, and AC/DC type tones?

I love the OX4s. I have several installed on my Historics. One set was Slash and I think the other set was low wind. They were both equally amazing. Great PAF tone. OX4 and Rewind are some of my favorites

I loved them- had a set of DW "regulars" in my '13 R9. Ticked all the boxes. Percussive is how I described them.

@questfor, what kind of amp(s) do you use? Do you play out? Those are two things to consider when it comes to pickups.

If you need to push your amp harder or cut through a mix, the hotter ones might be a better choice.
