Why did Gibson swap from Tulips to Kidneys on Les Paul Customs 2016/17?

Does anyone know why Gibson stopped speccing LP Customs with the classic Tulip tuning buttons around 2016/17?

In my humble opinion the kidney tuners don't look as good.

The non-reissue Customs have had tulip Grovers on them for decades. Just curious why Gibson changed to kidney beans in recent years.

I doubt that there is much of a why, they’ve been making the same product for 70 years so they need to change it up without reinventing the wheel.

I completely agree with you though, I much prefer the tulips to the kidney beans. I changed them on my white custom for that reason.

I am not sure you can divine any particular rationale. This happened in 2017 from what I recall: lots of upheaval across the lines in the last 5 years of HJ-era Custom Shop, with TH, HS, CC, CS and Richlite Customs all thrown in... not even considering Artist, Limited, etc. Also management departures. I think it's fair to say product architecture was all over the place.

Just idle speculation: perhaps this was meant to differentiate 'regular' LP Customs from Historic?

Although some Historic came with kidneys.
