LOL Mark knew as soon as he said 9 8xxx it wasn't real. The explorer is interesting as well especially being that case sure looks old.
Definitely some awkward things with that guitar.I don't see any evidence of that in the video. Why does the video, coming from the Official Gibson YouTube Channel, hosted by the Official Gibson Video Spokesdude, caption the guitar as "1959 Gibson Les Paul"? If he knew it wasn't vintage, why didn't he tell the video producer or editor?

There is at least one confirmed burst with a high '59 serial no.: 9 9072 at burstserial.comMark knows 59 burst SN # don't go up to 9 8xxx 90s fret nibs included lol
It's a shame that "10 quilt top" didn't end up on a PRS where it belongs.
I felt badly for Mark. He did the best anyone could have done, under the circumstances. With all the genuinely priceless vintage guitars in the collection, nobody could have been prepared for a straight-up R9 to be in that Burst case. I would have immediately thought I was being pranked - so I think he deserves a lot of credit for handling it as well as he did in that moment.
Of course, that's a polite way to handle it in person. And then afterward you edit the questionable guitar out of the video to avoid any problems and preserve your credibility. But they left it in and labelled it a 1959 Les Paul?Does he risk blowing the video right there by upsetting the host? I would have rolled with it as well, if I were him.
Agreed also. Rick is known to be a massive prankster and has a weird sense of humor. I wouldn't have put it past him to grab an SX and call it an original Strat. (trying to) pass a Rx for a real-deal Burst wouldn't be past him. At least in an interview like this; I doubt he'd try to scam someone on a real buy / sell deal.I felt badly for Mark. along with a very authentic 58 in the start of the video not even a minute in.
Exactly, the inlays never lie. That's a '68 conversion.
That was the my first tip-off.. along with the top carve and the way the rings sit on the top. Too sharp of a carve!Mark knows 59 burst SN # don't go up to 9 8xxx 90s fret nibs included lol

Almost none of what you said is knowledgeable. All made up hearsay.Rick Nielsen also owns a sunburst 1959 Gibson Les Paul that he acquired as a gift from Geddy Lee Of Rush. My uncle shares his birthday with Rick Nielsen.
Rick also plays Hamer guitar, as well as Flying Vs, Telecasters, Stratocaster, Explorers, SG, Rickenbacker and various Gretsches.
Oddly, Rick started out as a drummer, but after hearing Elvis Presley, switched to playing guitar. Ricks son Jazz plays drums for Cheap Trick now. No wonder they’re considered “Power Pop” (pun intended)
