• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

LOL Mark knew as soon as he said 9 8xxx it wasn't real. The explorer is interesting as well especially being that case sure looks old.

I don't see any evidence of that in the video. Why does the video, coming from the Official Gibson YouTube Channel, hosted by the Official Gibson Video Spokesdude, caption the guitar as "1959 Gibson Les Paul"? If he knew it wasn't vintage, why didn't he tell the video producer or editor?

Definitely some awkward things with that guitar.
Also, when Mark asks him where he got it, Rick only says "have you ever heard of George Gruhn?" like if he is uncomfortable telling outright he bought it from Gruhn.
Well I could be oversensitive, but the again...

I felt badly for Mark. He did the best anyone could have done, under the circumstances. With all the genuinely priceless vintage guitars in the collection, nobody could have been prepared for a straight-up R9 to be in that Burst case. I would have immediately thought I was being pranked - so I think he deserves a lot of credit for handling it as well as he did in that moment.

I agree...look at it this way...he has managed to get Rick to show his guitars...he has flown the filming crew down...has been filming all day probably and this happens while the cameras are rolling. Does he risk blowing the video right there by upsetting the host? I would have rolled with it as well, if I were him.

Of course, that's a polite way to handle it in person. And then afterward you edit the questionable guitar out of the video to avoid any problems and preserve your credibility. But they left it in and labelled it a 1959 Les Paul?

here it is again at the 2:11 mark but this time referred to as a 1960 Les Paul with the slash along with pickups in it.... along with a very authentic 58 in the start of the video not even a minute in.

Agreed also. Rick is known to be a massive prankster and has a weird sense of humor. I wouldn't have put it past him to grab an SX and call it an original Strat. (trying to) pass a Rx for a real-deal Burst wouldn't be past him. At least in an interview like this; I doubt he'd try to scam someone on a real buy / sell deal.
But that said, he's also as knowledgable a guitar hound as there is (I want to be a fly on the wall to see Rick and Joe Bonamassa talking guitars.|)
Rick's legitimately got several bursts, original Vs and Explorers, including lots of off the wall one-offs. Among stuff from every brand out there.

Good interview..... but the questionable '59 Les Paul quilt-top, and suspect '58 split-headstock Explorer taint an otherwise incredible guitar collection.

Rick Nielsen also owns a sunburst 1959 Gibson Les Paul that he acquired as a gift from Geddy Lee Of Rush. My uncle shares his birthday with Rick Nielsen.

Rick also plays Hamer guitar, as well as Flying Vs, Telecasters, Stratocaster, Explorers, SG, Rickenbacker and various Gretsches.

Oddly, Rick started out as a drummer, but after hearing Elvis Presley, switched to playing guitar. Ricks son Jazz plays drums for Cheap Trick now. No wonder they’re considered “Power Pop” (pun intended)

Almost none of what you said is knowledgeable. All made up hearsay.

Firstly he bought the sunburst that was once Geddy Lee's at auction.

Also his son's name is Daxx.
