In what sounds like a pathetic attempt to reinvent themselves, Rolling Stone Magazine vows to be harder on Eric Clapton. (n) I guess because beating up on a Boomer who had the unmitigated gall to take an anti-vaccine stance (but later reneged) is fashionable and good for sales.
A friend from the midwest summed it up like this: "Eh, its downfall is that it’s not 1967-80 anymore and Bruno Mars or whoever ain’t no Zep or Floyd. When it tries to cover what’s sort of happening now, it seems like the middle aged guy with a gut and a combover trying to score again at the club that’s in the same building Dixie Electric Co was in in ‘78." 😂

Rolling Stone was created for rock stars to say controversial things. (And for its writers to say controversial things. As Joe Hagan wrote of Jann Wenner in his 2017 biography, Wenner had to be talked out of running a pro-Charles Manson piece by his editors.) And now in their dotage, they're shocked to discover a rock star has said a controversial thing. Dive to the fainting couch! 😦

I don't agree with Clapton's stance by the way, but I love his playing and singing. Similarly, I don't take my music advice from medical experts.

"Rock journalism is people who can't write, interviewing people who can't talk, for people who can't read." - Frank Zappa

Rolling Stone was always the most chic, banal, pretentious, predictable, and conformistically radical rag out there. Snap fingers.

I'm just happy to see the guy playing again and not stove up with arthritis or something. I'm not sure what else EC does as well. Unless he has improved, a lot, parenting wasn't his strong suit. Though he was reasonably good at procreation. A veritable Johnny Appleseed of semination!

|If Rolling Stone thought you were good, you were great, and could never do anything wrong.
If they didn't like you or your genre, there's nothing you could do to change their minds.
Neil Peart, in one of his books, talked about meeting a Rolling Stone writer one time, who said something to the effect of
"sorry we haven't done a piece on you, but you're not cool enough for Rolling Stone.|"
Neil replied, in one of those few times that you come up with the right thing to say at the right time, not 20 minutes later -
"well, we've always thought that Rolling Stone isn't cool enough for us either."

Well they had a crack at him in '67 with the 'blues cliches' article so things haven't changed in that regard..........RS in a non-event unfortunately.

The only good writers they've ever had were the ones who didn't cover music. Now? Oh man, they're terrible all the way around.

No matter what you can say about Clapton, and many have a whole lot to say, I really stay away from that stuff as most of my musical heroes were total assholes in one form or another. This album, that solo, this tune, etc is what brings me to the table.

In his autobiography, and in the recent documentary film, A Life in 12 Bars, Clapton discusses how after getting sober and marrying Melia McEnery in 1998, parenting and raising a family became his number one priority.

Rolling Stone writes the most predictable pastiche pieces and plays favorites so hardcore, it’s nauseating. No really, RS- tell me how the latest Bruce Springsteen album is the greatest thing since sliced bread- and the next, and the next (no knock on Bruce, just RS).

The thing with Eric is there always seems to be a "but" associated with any discussion of him as a musician.

I think he's a great Guitarist with an important body of work to his name.

I'll leave the rest to, well, the rest.

It has gotten to the point where, when Rolling Stone shows up in the mail, I just toss it straight into the recycling bin.
I subscribed to RS back in college back in '87. After a few issues I started doing the same. Why anyone reads that rag is beyond me.

I used to like the Hunter Thompson pieces. I haven't read it since probably 1978- unless I dig a copy out of storage by accident (I have the one after the Who tragedy in Pittsburgh, with Pete with a tape up hand with blood running down his forearm).
When I stop and think about it, the most songs I know by any single guitarist, besides Keef, is EC.

Ha! Exactly what I was thinking. After the Hunter Thompson byline disappeared, I stopped giving a damn about Rolling Stone. It was always a pretentious, vacuous excuse for journalism, IMO.

Which you can say about virtually every superstar: Jimmy Page, Keith Richards, Michael Jackson, etc. Bad men — or men with serious flaws — are capable of creating great art.

EC is fully vaccinated. He did have very bad reactions to both shots.

And outspoken about that.
Social media is such these days that whatever you put on there, facebook, twitter, instagram, tik tok etc, every man and his dog comments about it.
I choose not to be a part of that and keep my facts and opinions for verbal conversations and emails. Too much is given to BS otherwise.

I wouldn't suggest putting a modicum of faith in ANY e-mail being ANYTHING approaching secure or private. If you say it here...or there, it's essentially become a piece of 'fossilized' data forever more. And increasingly apparent that it could be used against you. Or for you, depending on how you may or may not fall in favor with the ones who censor. But I digress...EC is God!

That's kind of the point of thread - how far the mighty have fallen. It's almost if we have forgotten just who was behind the coveted, Beano LP, as if that guitar somehow played itself. But like most things, I guess, it's 'what have you done for me, lately?' In EC's case, apparently, that's nothing. Off to the dustbin of ancient history...

Now that I think about it, who more than EC, by virtue of carrying on the blues tradition - for a very long time, said, "Black Lives Matter?" He's probably more 'woke' than any modern day, "Music Journalist" knows. And isn't that what this is really all about?
